Introduction: The life of a ship is about 30 to 35 years. Ships are dismantled, then recycled into further use. Shipbreaking can be a viable for national economy. World’s 70% of ships are dismantled on the South Asian shores. In 1980s, Gadani was the largest shipbreaking yard in the world. Employed 30,000 workers in 1980s. Now 3 rd largest and employees decreased from 30,000 to 6000.

Condition of Pakistan’s Shipbreaking Industry in 1990s.
SHIP BREAKING IN PAKISTAN: Industry provides raw material to the domestic Steel Industry. bringing scrap ships and cutting and converting it into Raw Material. Rerolling material mainly for Rerolling Industry and small Steel Cottage Industries. Meltable steel/ iron scrap goes to Remelting Industry as well. 20,000 direct skilled and unskilled workers at Gadani. 200,000 are employed into downstream industries, contractors, transporters, petty traders and cottage industry etc.
