February 15 1564
vRoman Catholics
vHe is an astronomer, astrologer, Italian
physicist, and a philosopher who was
associated with the scientific revolution.
vGalileo helped develop the scientific
method by using experimentation to
test physical theories.
v He was also called and referred as the
“father of modern astonomy”, the
“father of of modern physics”, and the
“father of science.
v Galileo Galilei died on January 8 1642.

Education
vAt age eleven, Galileo was sent off to study in a Jesuit monastery.
vAfter 4 years, he said he wanted to be a monk. But this was not what
his father had in mind so he withdrew him from the monastery.

entered the University of Pisa and took medicine just as what his
father wanted him to do
vIn 1585, he gave up his courses in Medicine without completing his
degree and pursued to become a Mathematics Teacher. Then, he
began teaching Math privately in Florence
Telescope
•Came up with telescope because he got the idea of improving spyglass
•3 power -> 10 power spyglass
•Wealth and honor
•Built Telescope -> 30 power
•Could observe space
Discoveries with Telescope
-Moon has mountains
-4 moons orbiting Jupiter
-Sunspots, Lunar Mountains
-Milky Way has billion stars
the four most massive moons of Jupiter
Sunspots
Moon has mountains
-When Galileo observed Jupiter he discovered its four
largest Moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
These moons are named the “Medicean stars”
Discovery of Jupiter’s orbiting moons around it
prove that Earth was not the only body with objects
in orbit around it.
HELIOCENTRIC
Developed the first rough theory of inertia, which
suggested that only a change in motion required a cause;
otherwise, objects either stayed in motion or remained at
rest.
Inertia
Ultimately delivered the first well-defined formulas
that accounted for the normal motion of objects on
moving earth
If a uniform force was applied
to an object, it would move at
an accelerated speed rather
than a constant speed
Principle of inertia: body in
motion continues in motion
forever unless deflected by
an external force
Church Controversy
-It is commonly believed that the Catholic Church persecuted Galileo for
abandoning the geocentric (earth-at-the-center) view of the solar system for the
heliocentric (sun-at-the-center) view.
-He was sentenced to imprisonment, but that was later condemned to house
arrest.
-During this period, personal interpretation was a sensitive subject. In the early
1600s, the Church had just been through the Reformation experience, and one of
the chief quarrels with Protestants was over individual interpretation of the Bible.
Social Life of Galileo
vProved Aristotle wrong
vSociety’s denouncement
vExperiment at the Tower of Pisa
vFrustrated by the blindness of people
