Ganesh Chaturthi
•Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrated in honor of Lord
Ganesha.
•It is celebrated on the occasion of birthday of Lord Ganesha.
•It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi .
•It is a ten day festival that starts on the fourth day of Hindu luni-
solar calendar month Bhadrapada (August to September).
•It is well celebrated in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Telangana,

home in states such as Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya
Pradesh.

Birth of Ganesha
•There are different stories associated with the birth of Lord
Ganesha.
•One of the story goes that Lord Ganesha was not born to Lord Shiva
and Parvathi but instead was created by Parvati using turmeric
powder. Parvati wanted a son who is loyal to her. So she shaped the
powder into a strong and beautiful son and then brought him into
life. Later when Parvati was going to bathe she gives Ganesha a
staff and tells him to not let anybody in without permission. After a
while Shiva comes from his penance from the Himalayas and
wonders who the boy was. When asked, he told him that, he was
the son of Parvati and no one can enter here without his mother’s
permission. Shiva turned furious on being stopped from entering
his own house. Shiva goes so mad lifted his trident and severed the
head of the boy and entered the house. Just then, Parvati came out
from her bath. She was devasted to see her son lying dead before
her eyes. She decided to destroy the world but Brahma asks for
mercy and tells not to destroy the world.

•Parvati agrees under two conditions, that her son comes back to life
and that he must be worshiped before any other god. Shiva too was
filled with remorse. He agreed to bring the boy back to life. Shiva
sends Brahma to go North and bring him the head of the first
animal they encounter. Brahma returns with the head of an
elephant. Brahma fitted the head of the elephant to the boy and
sprinkled water on him. Ganesha woke with the head of an
elephant on his shoulders. Parvati thought that her son would
never earn his rightful place among gods. No one may worship a
god that has a human body and an elephants head. Shiva knew
what was troubling Parvati. To diminish her fears, Shiva invoked all
the gods and asked them bless their son. The gods blessed the boy
and bestowed many boons on him. Shiva recognized him as his son
and named him "Ganesha" or "Ganapati (leader among all classes
of beings or Ganas)". Shiva also said that Ganesha will be treated
like a god and that he shall be worshipped before any god.

Why Ganesha has a broken tusk?
•There are different stories associated to the same.
•One of the story goes like this. When sage Ved Vyasa came up with
the idea of Mahabharata, he was looking around to find someone
who can write the story down as he recited them. He decided to
ask Ganesha to do it for him. Ganesha agreed to do it. Lord
Ganesha was writing the story so fast that the pen broke! However
Lord Ganesha did not stop writing, he just broke one of his tusks
and started writing withit! To write the script Ganesha broke the
tip of his tusk.
•Some are also of the belief that Lord Parashurama cut off one of
Ganesha's tusks because he didn't allow him to enter the Shiva
abode and meet Lord Shiva, who was busy praying.

Why is Ganesha Chaturthi celebrated?
•According to folklore, the Mahabharata was written by the great
sage Veda Vyasa. He could not compose and write such a lengthy
story at the same time. He needed somebody's help to write the
story. Brahma asked Veda Vyasa to ask Lord Ganesha –the elephant
headed God, for help.He said that Lord Ganesha was not to write
anything unless he understood the meaning of what was narrated
to him. Lord Ganesha smiled and accepted the condition. Thus
Veda Vyasa began narrating the story and Lord Ganesha wrote
down the story accurately. Whenever the sage needed some rest,
he would compose a stanza with a very difficult meaning. Lord
Ganesha would ponder over the meaning of the stanza, while the
sage refreshed himself, or composed more stanzas.
•Composing the Mahabharata commenced on BrahapatShukla
Chaturthi and was completed on AnantChaturdashi.
•In order to keep Lord Ganesha cool through the writing, Vyasa
applied mud on the Lord’s body.

Why is Ganesha Chaturthi celebrated?
•At the end of the composition, the Lord’s body temperature had
risen a lot due to lack of any breaks. Maharishi Vyasa then
immersed the Lord in water and washed off the mud.
•This started off the practice of Ganesh Chaturthi, where the Lord in
clay form is brought home, and offered foods for 10 days.
•On the 11
th
day, prayers are conducted and the clay form of the
Lord is immersed in a nearby lake or river.

History
•Ganesh Chaturthi was being celebrated as a public event by the
Peshvas in Pune since the times of Sivaji Maharaj. This was done to
promote culture and nationalism.
•With the fall of Peshvas, Ganesh Chaturthi lost patronage and
became a private family celebration.
•Indian freedom fighter and social reformer Lokamanya Tilak
introduced a new way of celebrating it as a collective community
worship. He used this festival as a platform to unite all social
classes.
•It served as a meeting place for common people of all castes and
communities. It was a time when all social and political gatherings
were forbidden by the British Empire for fear of conspiracies to be
hatched against them.
•With the independence of India in 1947, it was declared to be a
National festival.

How is it celebrated in India?
•A life-like clay model of Lord Ganesha is made 2-3 months prior to
the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. On the day of the festival, it is placed
on raised platforms in homes or in elaborately decorated outdoor
tents for people to view and pay their homage. The priest, usually
clad in red silk dhoti and shawl, then invokes life into the idol
amidst the chanting of mantras. This ritual is called
'pranapratishtha'.

•After this, the 'shhodashopachara' (16 ways of paying tribute)
follows. Coconut, jaggery, 21 'modakas' (rice flour preparation), 21
'durva' (trefoil) blades and red flowers are offered.
•Throughout the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda and
Ganapati AtharvaShirshaUpanishad, and Ganesha stotrafrom the
NaradaPuranaare chanted.
•For 10 days, from BhadrapadShudhChaturthi to theAnanta
Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshiped.

•On the 11th day, the image is taken through the streets in a
procession accompanied by dancing, singing, to be immersed in a
river or the sea. This symbolizes a ritual see-off of the Lord in his
journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him
the misfortunes of all man. All join in this final procession, shouting
"GanapathiBappaMorya, PurchyaVarshiLaukariya" (O father
Ganesha, come again early next year). After the final offering of
coconuts, flowers and camphor are made, people carry the idol to
the river to immerse it.
