Gastroschisis is a congenital birth defect where a baby is born with their intestines (and sometimes other organs, like the stomach or liver) protruding outside of the abdomen through a hole in the abdominal wall, typically located to the right of the umbilical cord. Unlike another similar condition called omphalocele , in gastroschisis, the organs are not covered by a protective membrane .
