Social awareness is the ability to comprehend and appropriately react to both broad

Social Issues: Local and InternationalIntroduction to the Study of Globalization
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this chapter, you must be able to:
•Agree on a working definition of globalization for the course;
•Differentiate the competing conceptions of globalization; and
•Narrate a personal experience of globalization
WHY DO WE
NEED TO
STUDY THE
WORLD?
Defining Globalization
•In general, globalization is the sharing of culture, and money, and
products, between countries that is happening because of
international trade, and advancement in transportation and
communication.
•Globalization is also a social process where people become more
and more aware of other cultures and people, across
geographical political and social borders. The economic
interdependence of different countries, as well as the
advancements in communication technology, and the progress of
technology in general, have all contributed to globalization.
Defining Globalization
•The word used to describe the growing interdependence and
integration of the world’s economies, populations, cultures and
traditions, ideas and information, organizations/businesses,
religions, languages –brought about by cross-border trade in of
goods and services, technology, flows of investment, people, and
information.
Defining Globalization
•Entails the integration of local and national economies
into a global, unregulated market economy
•Economic process of integration that’s associated with
social and cultural aspects.
• The world is a global village: there is a death of
distance
•A complex phenomenon that occurs at multiple levels
and an uneven process that affects people differently
A market economy is an economic system in
which the economic decisions and the pricing of
goods and services are guided by the interactions
of a country’s individual; citizens and businesses
“The expansion and the
intensification of social
relations and
consciousness across
world-time and across
world-space.”
-Manfred Steger
EXPANSION
Both the creation of new social networks and the multiplication of existing connections that cut across
traditional, political, economic, cultural, and geographical boundaries
•Social Media (people)
•International groups
of NGOs (social workers,
activists)
INTENSIFICATION
Expansion, stretching, and acceleration of these social networks. Global connections are becoming more
closely-knit and expanding their reach.

•Internet
•Email

Scapes of Globalization
Major Types of Globalization
ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION
● increasing economic interdependence of
national economies across the world through a
rapid increase in cross-border movement of goods,
services, technology, and capital.
● the economies of nations are interconnected
through the exchange of resources, products and
money.
Major Types of Globalization
SOCIAL AND CULTURAL GLOBALIZATION
● refers to the transmission of ideas, meanings, and
values around the world in such a way as to extend
and intensify social relations.
● this kind of globalization includes the sharing of
ideas, knowledge and cultural norms between nations
Major Types of Globalization
TECHNOLOGICAL GLOBALIZATION
● this kind of relationship between nations is
as a result of the infrastructure in place for
television, radio, telephones and the internet.
Major Types of Globalization
POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION
●growth of the worldwide political system, both
in size and complexity
●the expansion of a global political system, and
its institutions, in which inter-regional transactions
(including, but certainly not
limited to trade) are managed
Advantages of Globalization
1. Greater understanding and knowledge of many countries culture
2. Investment into developing country’s economies
3. Greater range and access to different products
4. Increase production of companies due to greater demands
5. Larger market range
6. Job Creation
7. Greater innovation and development in products and technology
8. Cheaper products
Disadvantages of Globalization
1. Outsourcing of services to other countries
2. Possible increase of unemployment-machines and technology
3. Closure of small business
4. Degradation of environment- scarcity of resources
5. Conflict between and among countries
