THE STUDY OF
HUMANITIES
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this chapter, the students should be
able to:
1.Give the meaning of Humanities, art, art appreciation,
and art history;
2.Differentiate art history from art appreciation; and
3.Discuss the importance of art in contemporary society.
The Origin and Meaning of
Humanities
The term “HUMANITIES” originated from
the Renaissance Latin expression
“STUDIA Humanities' study of humanitas
which refers to “culture, refinement,
education.
15
th
century, the studia
humanitatis became a
secular study in the
universities at the time.
The course primarily consisted
of grammar, rhetoric, poetry,
history, and moral philosophy,
Latin and Greek classics.
Humanities today include
literature, language, philosophy,
geography, history, religion,
music, and art.
MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF
ART
1. Art is a product of man’s need to express
himself – F. ZULUETA
2. Art is an attitude of spirit, a state of mind – one
which demands for its own satisfaction and
fulfilling, a shaping matter to new and more
significant form – JOHN DEWEY
3. Art is not what you see but what you make
others see – PABLO PICASSO
4. Art is a life that helps us to
realize the truth – PABLO
PICASSO
5. Art is never finished, only
abandoned – LEONARDO DA
VINCI
FOUR COMMON ESSENTIALS
OF ART
1. Art is man-made, not
God-made.
2. Art is creative, not
imitative
3. Art benefits and satisfies man – when he
uses art in practical life through artistic
principles, taste, and skill.
4. Art is expressed through a certain
medium or material by which the artist
communicates himself to his fellows.
GIVE AT LEAST ONE REASON
WHY ART IS IMPORTANT
ART HISTORY
✔Historical development and stylistic
context of the objects of arts that
includes the major and minor arts.
✔Art Historians examine the works of art
in the context of its time or within
which it was created.
✔Art Historians
analyze the works
of arts through the
analysis of their
forms.
ART HISTORY
✔Art Historians also use critical theory in
analyzing objects of arts when dealing
with more recent objects.
✔Application of media and digital
technology.
TWO APPROACHES IN
CREATING ART
TWO-DIMENSIONAL
THREE-DIMENSIONAL
REPRESENTATIONAL
If the artist copy or
imitate an object or
image found in nature
TWO APPROACHES IN THE
RESULT OF ART
NON-REPRESENTATIONAL
(ABSTRACT ART)
If the artist creates an art in a
realistic manner rely on
symbolism or striving to
capture nature’s essence.
EXAMPLES
IMPRESSIONISM
Produced when the artwork was not directly imitative but an
impression of nature.
EXPRESSIONISM
Produced when the artist express his/her feelings, longings,
aspirations, and ideals of beauty and form.
PURPOSE OF ART HISTORY
✔To place art in a social and historical
context.
✔More advantage over art appreciation
when evaluating works of art.
ASSUMPTIONS
OF ART
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this chapter, the students should be
able to:
1.Clarify misconception about art;
2.Differentiate art from nature;
3.Categorize works of art by citing personal experience;
and
4.Characterize the assumptions of the arts.
ART IS UNIVERSAL
In every country of the world, art exist because it is important to
people’s lives. In fact, man learned to draw before he could even
start to talk as evidenced by some early paintings in caves and trunks
of trees – shown in prehistoric times.
ART IS CULTURAL
Through art people learn about their culture’s values and strengthen
their culture’s identity. Through art people feel proud of their traditions
and beliefs because they give a sense of belonging.
ART IS NOT NATURE
Art is man’s interpretation of what he perceives as art. Nature, such as
the mountains, the volcano, lakes, rivers, land terrain are made by
God and not by man.
ART IS AN EXPRESSION OF
THE MIND
According to Jeff Lee (2016), art is a form of expression of the deepest
emotion of the minds, According to him, the egoic mind and the
echoic mind together making up the totality of thinking.
ART IS A FORM OF
CREATIVITY
Artist create artwork about anything they want, imagine, or see
around them. The artists use their imagination to create any artwork
using strange shape and different kinds of links and colors
ART INVOLVES EXPERIENCE
When a work is finished in a satisfactory manner, an experience occurs. Likewise,
when a problem is solved, or a game is played; experience do occur. Fulfillment and
consummation of an act conclude the experience.
FUNCTIONS &
PHILOSOPHY OF
ART
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this chapter, the students should be
able to:
1.Describe the functions and philosophy of art; and
2.Clarify misconceptions of art.
FUNCTIONS OF ARTS
▪Utilitarian Function- through art, man is provided with shelter,
clothing, food, light, medicine, beautiful surroundings, personal
ornamentals, entertainments, language, transportation, and other
necessities and convenience of life.
▪Educational Function- Art
symbols and signs.
▪Spiritual Function- Art express
spiritual beliefs.
PHILOSOPHY OF ART
ART AS MIMESIS
The word mimesis is a Greek word which means “imitation” or
“copying”, although it may also mean representation. The Philosophers
Plato and Aristotle spoke of mimesis as the representation of nature.
ART AS REPRESENTATION
(ARISTOTLE)
Art represents something. When an artist uses signs and symbols to
take the place of something else, he is using art as a representation of
such signs and symbols.
ART AS AN ESCAPE
According to Allen Weinstein, without mental escape, we build up a
lot of anxiety within ourselves.
According to Seneres and others (2008), the artists' works of art
reveal the emotional outburst that has been kept for many years in
their mind.
ART AS FUNCTIONAL
Artist intent in creating a functional piece of art is to bring creativity,
beauty, and usefulness into people’s everyday lives.
SUBJECT OF ART
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this chapter, the students should be
able to:
1.Differentiate content from subject;
2.Classify artworks according to subject;
3.Analyze how artists present their subject in relation to
the real subject; and
4.Characterize sources and kinds of art.
Meaning of Subject of Art
In any art form – painting, music, sculpture, architecture,
or dance – there is always a subject that serves as the
foundation of the creation of the work of art.

TECHNIQUE APPROACHES IN VISUAL ARTS,
AUDITORY ARTS, AND COMBINED ARTS
According to Katherine Brooks, there are nine (9) techniques that
anyone can do in approaching creativity in arts.
1.Paint an Object from your home or office
“Train the mind to see form and understand how it sees form, and the
hand to represent that understanding, is the start to gaining visual artists’
tools of expression” -BROOKS
2. Perfectly frame an architectural photograph
“it is good to study a photographic scene slowly and carefully, observing
how objects interact in space. To do this, you must shift your angle in
space in relation to your subject that can make or break the dynamism of
a photograph” –DOSKOW, 2011
3. Design a whimsical collage
Simply select interesting sheets of the
printed page and cut them up with a
scissor to tear them into pieces,
reposition them to form a collage.
5. Make a fabric masterpiece
4. Craft a metal sculpture from
thin steel
Anyone can make metal
sculptures and small steel
objects by cutting, folding, and
pasting them as in poster board.
7. Turn your Journal into Visual Diary
6. Turn your camera on the
clouds
9. Doodle like a Traditional
Animator
8. Fingerprint

individuality.
3. VIRTUALLY TREND – People
nowadays immersed into an
experience and exciting ways
of art.
