Properties and Classification of Matter
Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter Physical Properties – directly observable or measurable without having to change the identity of the substance. Ex. Viscosity- is the measure of fluid’s resistance to flow. Ketchup-high viscosity Water-low viscosity
Physical Changes – are those that involve changes in physical properties and thus, do not involve a change in identity of substance. Phase changes is an example of physical change because its composition remains the same (melting, freezing, evaporation).
Chemical Properties – are properties that can only be determined with an accompanying change in identity. Ex. Flammability - a measure of how quickly a specific material is capable of catching fire and burning. Paper, you only get to confirm that the paper is flammable once it gets burned.
Chemical Changes – are those that involves changes in identity of a substance. Ex. Rusting of nail.
Physical changes can be reversed easily , while chemical changes cannot be easily reversed .
Extensive and Intensive Properties of Matter Extensive Properties - properties that are dependent on amount of matter. Ex. Mass and volume Intensive Properties – properties that are not dependent on amount of matter. Ex. melting and boiling point.
