GENERAL HEALTH SURVEY

GENERAL SURVEY: Introduction Once you understand the patient’s concerns and have elicited a careful history, you are ready to begin the physical examination Physical examinations starts with general survey and vital signs

Reasons for general survey Apparent State of Health . Try to make a general judgment based on observations made throughout the encounter. Support it with the significant details . Level of Consciousness. Is the patient awake , alert , and responsive to you and others in the environment? Signs of Distress. For example, does the patient show evidence of these problems ? Cardiac or respiratory distress, Pain, Anxiety or depression etc .

General survey assessment State of Consciouness Gender/Gender identity Age Developmental stage Nutritional status - skin, body stature, extreem malnutrition

Striking features of the patient eg personality, moon shape face, protruding eyes etc Dressing Gross abnormalities eg missing limbs, extreeme Spinal curvature Height , Weight and Build according to age Skin Color and Obvious skin issues Dress, Grooming, and Personal Hygiene .

Facial Expression Odors of the Body and Breath Posture, Gait and Motor Activity Developmental Stage Obvious signs of Health and illness

Calculating the BMI.

Interpreting BMI BMI above 25, or the weight is greater than the upper limit of recommended weight for height, a nutrition assessment is in order. If the BMI falls below 17, or the weight is less than the low end of the range of weight for height, be concerned about possible anorexia nervosa, bulimia, or other medical conditions

BMI counselling
