Geothermal Energy

Geothermal Energy is the energy derived from the center of the Earth. Geothermal comes from the Greek words geo which means “ Earth” and thermal which means “ heat” . The heat is captured and harnessed for electrical power generation. This type of energy has been used for years I some other countries for cooling, heating and other sources of electricity.

The Pacific Ring of Fire , also known as the Circum - Pacific Belt, is where 75% of the world’s volcanoes. It is the major area where most frequent volcanic activities and earthquakes usually occur.

The Geothermal power plant

The Philippines has several geothermal power plants. These geothermal power plants Provide alternative source of energy which is greener and eco-friendlier than coal and fossil fuels.

In conventional geothermal energy , steam from natural resources such as geysers or high pressure depths are used to drive electric turbines, whereas in volcanic geothermal energy, the scientists and researchers are using the heat from supercritical water . The supercritical water is believed to have the greater energy than conventional steam, which is produced when molten rock and water interact with each other.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy

Advantages Disadvantages More environment friendly than coal and fossil fuel resources. A renewable energy No fuel required Efficient Rapid evolution (more improvements are done to mitigate its advantages) May trigger earthquakes (a result of digging) Located restricted (power plants must be built where geothermal energy is accessible.) Environmental concerns about greenhouse emissions High investment cost for geothermal systems Building of geothermal power plants may affect the stability of land
