Geriatric radiography

introduction Geriatrics or geriatric medicine and imaging is a speciality that focuses on healthcare of elderly people. For statistical purpose 65 years and over is considered as the old age group.

Difficulty during radiography In contrast to younger people, handling of elderly patients is different and usually takes more time. In most cases, elderly patients have to be transferred to the radiology department and may need supervision while waiting . Positioning requires more time, and often patients need assistance . With bedridden patients, more than one person is needed for proper positioning . . The ideal imaging test for elderly patient is fast and needs few changes in positioning .

Top 10 conditions of people older then 65 years Arthritis Hypertension Heart disease cataracts Orthopedic problems Chronic sinusitis Diabetis Visual impairment vericose veins Hearing impairment

Common disease of geriatrics Multiple chronic disesase Cancer Diabettis mellitus

Points of radiographer Clear instruction should be given. Sufficient time must give to undress. They should always be told what is going to happen . Privacy and modest treatment is nessesary. Avoid hurting them because the peripheral blood vessel s are very fragile communication problems may arise due to the loss of teeth s.

Exposure parameters A number of problems arise on elders because of the fact the skeleton become brittle due to the loss of bone substance . As calcium is lost from the bones, for elder patients. Osteporosis always seen in the radiographs. There is a general need reduce exposure factors.

Chest radiography The lung chest radiography is PA ,projections mostly used for geriatrics. In lung disese is known on this used for in this chest x ray. In frail patients stand position of the cannot be obtained and take chest radiograph on supine position .

Computed tomograpgy Modern multislice CT scanners the lung can be examined in after few seconds . But even with modern CT scanners motion artifacts due to breathing may problem in the elderly.

ultrasound The ultrasound may offer additional information to better then chest radiography. In frail patients its easy to use bedside test . The ultra sound give use for the further information about congestive heart failiure , pneumothorax. Can be obtained.
