difference between Embassy, Consulate and
High Commission?

Anyone of us has ever heard the
term “Embassy”, “Consulate” and
“High Commission” but not all can
point out clearly the differences
between them and how to use
these terms properly.
When people get into trouble on
the visa, immigration, abroad
studying or things related to foreign
countries and people, who will call
for help? The embassy, the
consulate or the High Commission.
The article will point out the major
differences with brief explanation.

Embassy operates as a head
office while a consulate is the
branch office. In a host country,
there is only on ambassador
located in the capital, while
there maybe many consulates
in the major cities.
 For example, in the Unites
States, there is only one
German Embassy in
Washington DC, United States,
based in the capital city of
America – Washington D.C.

But there are a lot of consulates in
big cities: German Consulate in San
Antonio, United States, German
Consulate in Seattle, United States,
German Consulate in San Diego,
United States, German Consulate in
Virginia Beach, United States,
German Consulate in Oklahoma,
United States, German Consulate in
Boston, United States, German
Consulate in San Francisco, United
States, German Consulate in New
York, United States...

Totally, there are 40 German
consulates in the United States. In
small country, there is usually one
embassy and no consulate, for
example
Germany Embassy in Singapore
.

An ambassador is the representative
of the head of state and government
of their country in the host country.
The ambassador takes the
responsibility for the operation of the
embassy and consulates. He also
takes the responsibility in explaining
and informing the views and policies
of politics to the host country.
All the aspects related to the
relationship between 2 countries:
media, diplomatic, economic,
commercial and security issues.
There are rarely countries that have
the embassies and consulates in all
countries and territories of the world.

Consulate is a “mini embassy” or as
people often makes it clearer,
branch of embassy. Embassy is
often put in the capital city of the
host country and the ambassador
works there. But consulates are put
in other major cities, tourist cities in
which there are a great amount of
expatriate populations.
The consulate takes the
responsibility in the visa, passport,
immigration, and some other
document issues. Besides, these
consulates take the responsibility on
solving the problems relating to birth
registry, death registry, notary
functions, child abductions, forced
marriages. Their duties are also
protect the victims of crime…
