GERUND AND INFINITIVES

- ING GERUNDS Some verbs are sometimes followed by – ing . These verbs include: Admit Feel like Finish Postpone Avoid Dislike Give up Put off Detest deny Discuss mention Resist Cant help mind practice suggest risk appreciate

EXAMPLES 1. I have finished cleaning the house. 2. She enjoys reading mystery novels. 3. He avoided answering the difficult question. 4. We discussed going to the beach this weekend. 5. They started working on the project early. 6. She suggested trying a new restaurant. 7. I can't stand waiting in long lines. 8. He kept talking during the movie. 9. They are considering moving to a new city. 10. I don't mind helping you with your homework.

After preposition we usually use – ing . 1. She is interested in learning new languages. 2. He apologized for being late. 3. They talked about going on a vacation. 4. I look forward to meeting you. 5. She is tired of working so much . 6 . He is afraid of flying. 7. They succeeded in climbing the mountain. 8. She insisted on paying for dinner. 9. He is good at playing chess. 10. We are excited about moving to a new house.

We can also use – ing as the subject of a sentence. 1. Swimming is my favorite hobby. 2. Running can help improve your cardiovascular health. 3. Reading before bed helps me relax. 4. Cooking for the family is something I enjoy. 5. Writing in a journal can be therapeutic. 6. Traveling expands your horizons. 7. Dancing is a great way to express yourself. 8. Singing in the shower is fun. 9. Playing chess requires strategic thinking. 10. Learning new skills is important for personal growth.

EXAMPLE 1 . I plan to travel to Europe next summer. 2. She hopes to get a promotion at work. 3. They decided to buy a new car. 4. He needs to finish his homework before going out. 5. We agreed to meet at the café at noon. 6. She promised to help with the project. 7. He loves to play the guitar in his free time. 8. They asked to speak with the manager. 9. I intend to start a new hobby this year. 10. She likes to read books before going to bed.

MAKE\LET Some verbs are usually followed by an object + bare infinitive(to siz ): Make and Let She made her students read a book each month. They don’t let their children play outside. Make in the passive is followed by full infinitive. Lola was made to wash the dishes yesterday.

With some verbs meaning completely changes. These verbs include: Remember Remember + - ing - Recalling a past event. Example: I remember meeting him at the party last year . Remember + to + infinitive - Not forgetting to do something in the future. Example: Remember to lock the door before you leave.

STOP Stop + - ing : Ceasing an activity. Example: He stopped smoking last year . Stop + to + infinitive: Pausing an activity to do something else. Example: On our way to the park, we stopped to buy some snacks.

FORGET Forget + - ing : Failing to recall a past event . Example: I'll never forget seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time . Forget + to + infinitive: Failing to do something you were supposed to do. Example: She forgot to bring her notebook to class.

TRY Try + - ing : Experimenting with a new or different approach. Example: Try restarting your computer if it doesn't work . Try + to + infinitive: Making an effort to do something. Example: I try to exercise every day.

PASSIVE GERUND BEING + V3 1. She enjoys being praised. 2. The kids love being taken to the park. 3. He hates being told what to do. 4. The people prefer being fit . 5. They are afraid of being left alone. 6. He is proud of being chosen. 7 . She dislikes being interrupted. 8. He appreciates being helped.

PASSIVE INFINITIVE: TO BE + V3 1. The work needs to be done. 2. She was happy to be invited. 3 . He is likely to be chosen. 4. The report is ready to be printed. 5. The task needs to be finished. 6. She hopes to be accepted. 8. The letter needs to be sent. 9. The meal is expected to be served soon. 10. The rules are denied to be followed.
