Slide Content

Glandular Epithelium Prepared by : Saleh Abduraboh

Glandular Epithelium Is a special type of epithelium makes up the glands in body. Single or Group of cells. Secrets enzymes, hormones, fats or mucous. Its secretions are required by other tissue.

The formation of glands

Endocrine glands Ductless (no duct system). Release internally. Secret hormones. Multicellular with exception Paracrine glands.

Endocrine glands

Exocrine glands Have duct system. Release internally or externally. Secret ear-wax, digestive enzymes and saliva. Multicellular or unicellular.

Exocrine glands secretions watery waxy fatty cellular serous mucous mixed sweat Gl Oil Gl Saliv ary glands External ear Ovary & testis

Glandular classification According to : Presence and absence of ducts. Number of secretory cells. Nature of secretion. Mode of secretion. Shape of secretory units & Arrangement of Duct (branching in exocrine structure).

1. Presence and absence of ducts

Salivary gland (Exocrine)

Thyroid gland (Endocrine)

Pancreas gland (Mixed)

2. Number of secretory cells

First: Unicellular Exocrine (ex: Goblet cells )

First: Unicellular Endocrine (ex: Enteroendocrine cells)

Second: Multicellular Exocrine (ex: Endometrial glands)

Second: Multicellular Endocrine (ex: Thyroid gland)

3. Nature of secretion

4. Mode of secretion

5. Shape of secretory units & Arrangement of Duct

Gland as a compact organ
