This position gives varying degrees of economic and cultural authority to cities, which can be described as "nodal points" in a global system. They also act as gateways between the global and local regional hinterlands

The term has its origins in research on cities carried out during the 1980s, which examined the common characteristics of the world's most important cities. However, with increased attention being paid to processes of globalization during subsequent years, these world cities came to be known as global cities .
GaWC study (1999) from Loughborough University used its own methodology that defined the criteria for considering a city worldwide. Their results were classified into three types of cities: Alpha – 12 to 10 points. Beta – 9 to 7 points. Gamma – 6 to 4 points. In addition, it drew up a list for Potential cities: High Potential – 3 points. Medium potential – 2 points. Low potential – 1 point.

They actively participate in the world economic flow and constitute financial hubs in the respective regions. They have positive immigration rates and tend to host citizens of very different cultures and origins.
