Globe

In the Ancient the people
believe that the earth was flat.
Ferdinand Magellan, a
Portuguese explorer , sailed
around the earth and proved
that it is round in shape.
However, it is not perfectly
round.
Globe
A globe is a spherical model of
Earth, of some other celestial
body, or of the celestial sphere.

And shows the earth in its
correct shape
7 LINES ON GLOBE
A globe is the only accurate
way to study the whole earth.
It shows the distribution of
land and water on the surface
of the earth.
The correct shape, size, and
location of the continents and
oceans are shown.
Helps to locate sea route, air
route, rivers, cities, etc.

it helps to see the shape of
the Earth as a whole and to
know its unique features.
Globe helps in finding
places on earth using
latitudes and longitudes. It
also helps in navigation
route finding, date
calculation etc.
Advantages : It is the most
accurate three dimensional
representation of the earth. It
shows the distribution of

continents and oceans
accurately. Lines of latitude
and longitude are marked on a
globe. Disadvantages :Only a
part of the earth can be seen on
a globe at one glance.All
details cannot be marked on a
globe. A globe is difficult to
carry around.
Maps

A map is a representation or
drawing of the earth's surface

or a part of its area drawn on a
flat surface

What are the uses of
maps?
Answer: Generally, we
use maps as a
reference to show
political boundaries,
landforms, water

bodies, and the
positions of cities.
Few points about maps
A map is an image of an area,
usually of the Earth or part of
the Earth. A map is different
from an aerial photograph
because it includes
interpretation. Many maps are
called "charts" such as star
charts and nautical charts.

Some maps are of distant
worlds.
What is the type of maps?
The two main types of maps are
the reference maps, which show
geologic features and most important
political boundaries. The thematic map
shows more specific data that can
change more easily. Topographic maps
show the contour of the surface of the
Earth. Contour lines and shading
indicate elevations
. Why are maps so useful?

Maps offer you an interactive
and compelling way to explore
and learn more about the
world. They can be intuitive
tools for visualizing and
manipulating data. They can
turn that data into stories to
educate, persuade, and
remember. They can move
people and influence important
decisions.
What are 10 uses of
maps?

Interesting facts about globe
1.The
word globe comes
from the Latin

word Globus,
meaning "sphere".
2.Eartha is the
world's largest rotating
and revolving globe,
located within the
former headquarters of

the DeLorme mapping
corporation in
Yarmouth, Maine.
Garmin purchased the
company and the
building in 2016. The
globe weighs
approximately 5,600
pounds (2,500 kg), and
has a diameter of over
41 feet (12.5 m).

Facts about
maps
1. Cartography refers to the study of maps
and mapmaking, whereas the person who
makes maps is known as a cartographer.
2. Although today North may be at the
top of the maps, that was not always the
case. During the Middle Ages, the
majority of western maps placed east at the
top instead. The reason being, in Latin, the
word of the east is ”oriens.” Therefore, to
hold the map properly, they had to ”orient”

it to ensure that the east is east. It happens
to be the origin of the word orientation.
3. In 1798, James Rennell
drew the first map of
Africa showcasing the
massive Mountains of Kong. It
was enormous that it stretched
thousands of miles west to east
across Africa. He produced
some of the first accurate maps
of Bengal at one inch to five
miles as well as accurate
outlines of India and served as
Surveyor General of Bengal.

Rennell has been called the
Father of Oceanography.
4. However, the Mountains of
Kong did not exist; he
had made a
mistake. Nonetheless, the
Mountains of Kong were
placed on African maps for the
next 100 years.
5. There are two
Norths; magnetic north and
true north. Magnetic North is
the direction that the north end
of a compass needle points to

while true North is the course
of the geographic North pole.
i 6. The first map (the
Waldseemüller map or
Universalis Cosmographia) to
custom the name America was
made by Martin
Waldseemuller, a German
cartographer, in 1507. Also, it
is among the most expensive
maps in the world; the US

Library of Congress purchased
it for $10 million in 2013.
7. The oldest sphere on
record dates back to around
1,500 and is engraved on the
surface of an ostrich egg. It
also marks the first time the
idiom ”here be dragons”
appeared on a map. It was
written in Latin’ Latin’ hic
sunt dracones.”
8. In 44 CE, Pliny the Elder,
an ancient Roman thinker,
wrote that all creatures on

the land had a counterpart in
the ocean. For that purpose,
ancient cartographers would
draw sea-monsters on their
maps to appear like aquatic
versions of accustomed land
animals such as sea cows, sea
pigs, sea serpents. If you see a
seahorse or sea lion, you know
how they got their names!
Quiz Time
1.What is the true model of
the earth

2.What are the
disadvantage of a globe
3.How did we know, for a
first time, that the Earth
was round, not flat
4.What represent PO on the
map
5.Name four cardinal
direction on map
ANSWERS OF FOLOWING
QUESTIONS
1.Globe
2.Disadvantages of a
globe

A globe does not show
details of locations of a
small towns and other
such information.
 They do not show the
entire Earth at a time
Larger globes are difficult
to handle
 It is also difficult to carry
them around
3.In the Ancient time the
people believed that the
earth was flat Ferdinand
Magellan, a Portuguese
explorer, sailed around

the earth and proved that
the earth is round in
shape.
4.Post office
5.North ,South, East,
West.
Supplies
Styrofoam ball

Green and blue tissue paper
Scissors
White glue or Mod Podge
String
Screw eye
Brush, optional
Instructions
1 . Cut 2 pieces of blue
tissue paper into strips, then
into 1-2″ squares. Cut
abstract shapes out of
green tissue paper for your

continents, or you can be
detailed and cut out the
exact shapes using a map
for reference.
2. We found that
using our fingers to apply
the glue worked best, but a
brush works well and is less
messy. Apply glue to your

ball. Place tissue paper
squares on your ball,
overlapping and covering all
of the white. Use glue to
secure seams and make
everything is nice and
smooth.
3 After applying the blue
squares, lay the green continents
on top and smooth with your
fingers. Brush a thin layer of glue
over entire ball and let dry (the
white glue will dry clear). A skewer

and jar work great to keep it from
sticking to your work surface while
drying.
4.. Dip your
hanger in a bit of
glue and screw it into
the Styrofoam. Let
dry.

Thank you……
