Unit 4 – the future: plans and intentions

We can use several different forms to talk about the future in English. Let’s look at: When we use going to . When we use the present continuous and present simple. How we can make predictions about the future using will . When we use may and might to talk about possibility in the future. How we make sentences with will and going to . Function: When do we use them ? Look at the conversation. Are the friends talking about the past, present or future? The future. Look at what the girl says: ‘ I’m going to Marta’s birthday party.’ Is she talking about an organised plan or an intention? An organised plan. Marta is having a birthday party. Look at what the girl says next: ‘ It starts at 3pm’. Is this a prediction or something that is scheduled? It’s scheduled (e.g. in her diary). Look at the last thing the girl says: ‘ You might find something nice there.’ Is this a fact or is it a prediction? Does she know for sure? A prediction. She isn’t very sure. Look at what the boy says: ‘ I’m going to look for something at the shopping centre now.’ Is this a fixed arrangement or an intention? An intention. Arrangements and scheduled events often have times/time phrases or dates. In connected speech, we often pronounce going to as / gɒnə /. Listen to how your teacher says it and repeat.
