Harmandir Sahib ( The Golden Temple)

Historical Background of The Golden Temple Situated in Amritsar, Punjab, India. Most sacred temple for Sikhs. Harmandir means: Har (God) & Mandir (temple/house). The temple houses the sacred scriptures of the Sikhs , the Guru Granth Sahib ( complete holy book).

1574 - Amritsar city was founded by the 4 th guru, Guru Ram Das ji . 1578 - He began excavation of a fresh water tank & construction of the temple site. 1604 - Guru Arjan Dev ji the 5 th guru , completes the construction of the temple and the complex that took 13 years. - He also completes compiling the Adi Granth (first holy book). - The temple was first a mud structure . 1803 - The King of Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh redesigned & rebuilt the temple giving it’s present day look.
