ARTHRITIS

DEFINATION
Gonococcal arthritis is rare
complication of the sexually transmitted disease
gonorrhoea. It generally causes painful
inflammation of the joints and tissues. Gonorrhoea
is usually spread through sexual contact.
Etiological factors
◦Gonorrhoea is caused by a bacterium called
Neisseria gonorrhea.
◦Babies can also get gonorrhoea during
childbirth if their mothers are infected
◦other risk factors include:-multiple sexual
partners, unsafe sex etc..
Clinical manifestations
◦Red and swollen joints
◦Tender and painful joints
◦Restricted joints range of motion
◦Fever with chills
◦skin lesions
Diagnostic evaluation
◦History collection and physical examination
◦Throat culture test
◦cervical gram stain
◦urinalysis
◦complete blood counts/ blood studies
Management
◦Draining fluid out of the joints and immobilizing it
with splints to reduce swelling and pain.
◦Antibiotics therapy
◦Ceftriaxone 250 mg ( IV)
◦1 gm azithromycin or 100 mg doxycycline twice
a day for 7 to 10 days.
