Gossip - Main Outcomes There are many outcomes, such as: The destruction of a reputation. Bad working environment Feeling of solitude Waste of time Depression 5

When to Act on Gossip You need to act if the gossip is: D isrupting the work place and the business of work, H urting employees’ feelings, D amaging interpersonal relationships, or I njuring employee motivation and morale. 6

What Happens When Gossip Is Passed On? Distortion in recall Increase importance Forgetting - Some information gets lost Blending of events 7

Can gossip be POSITIVE ? YES!! It's the behind-the-scenes information you pass on to others, intended to boost someone's credibility rather than tear it down. It's mentioning the great job someone did to others when that person is not around.  8

Gossip’s Brother… ”THE BUSYBODY” The dictionary meaning defines a busybody as “ Meddler ” ( a person who involves oneself in a matter without right or invitation; a nosy person ) A busybody is the investigator for the gossips and rumors, seeking to uncover sensational details and to whisper the latest news . 9

Strategies To Avoid Gossip STRATEGY 01 Be direct with people who are gossiping about you or others. Tell them that what they're doing is hurtful and that you refuse to participate in such discussions. 10

STRATEGY 02 Change the subject. If your boss, a coworker or a close friend is gossiping and you feel uncomfortable asking them to stop, change the subject so that you don't have to participate in gossip that may end up hurting someone else's feelings. 11

STRATEGY 03 Prevent gossip by paying attention to what you do and say around others, especially around those who tend to gossip. While it may not be fun to censor yourself, at least you won't be providing any new material for people to spread rumors about. 12

STRATEGY 04 Tell your secrets only to trusted friends to be sure that no one is spreading your business around town. 13
