Introduction Environment management is basically a science to manage the environment appropriately and efficiently .It implies rational use of resources. The government of all developed countries , as well as the majority of developing countries have government department or agencies devoted to monitoring and protecting the environment

Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) US Federal agency National Environmental Policy Act[1969] Encourage productive and enjoyable harmony between man his envt Prevent or eliminate damage to the envt and biosphere Stimulate the health and welfare of man

EarthScan Founded by UNEP in 1976 Its headquarters are in London Its first director was Mr. Jon Tinker That commissions original articles on environmental matters ,and sells them as features to news papers and magazines ,especially in developing countries Earthscan was originally founded by International Institute for Environment and Development

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Independent federal agency Established in 1970 Dealing with the pollution of water,air,soil and with nuisances caused by noise Its headquarters are in Ireland

European Economic Community(EEC) Established in 1957 Initially the community was joined by six countries In 1973 ,these six were joined by Britain and Denmark and Ireland then by Greece in 1981 .Spain and Portugal were the last two countries to join Now, it has become community of 12 democratic nations The community has concrete political and economic structure The social objectives of EEC include the construction and implementation of a coordinated policy for envtl improvement and conservation of species and natural resources'

Food and Agricultural Organization(FAO) It was founded as a specialized agency of UN in 1945 FAO oppose the destruction of ecosystem as a consequence of agricultural expansion It assist organizations that protect the agricultural from grain-devouring birds Prevention of envtl ill effects from the use of fertilizers,pesticides,herbicides

Other environmental related activities of FAO are: _ preparation of world soil map _ Establishment of regional forestry commission _ Technical assistance in land use planning

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) IAEA is an independent intergovernmental organization within the United National System Objectives To accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy in to peace ,health and prosperity throughout the world To deal with scientific and commercial utilization of atomic energy To ensure that as assistance provided by it or under its supervision is not used for military purpose

International Labour Organization (ILO) UN agency -1919 140 member nations as of January ,1980 Safety and health of employees in the occupational envt Since 1969 a joint ILO_WHO committee on occupational health has studied problems and standards of air –borne pollutants Its headquarters are in Geneva and Switzerland

International Maritime organization (IMO) International UN agency It was established in 1948 It has 101 member nations as of January 1,1980 In 1982 its name was changed from Intergovernmental maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO)

To regulate the aspects of operation of ship including pollution seas, primarily by oil. To prevent pollution To provide remedies when prevention fail To assist development of jurisdictional powers to prescribe and enforce pollution control standards through intergovernmental cooperation

Natural Conservancy council (NCC) The official body ,founded by Britain by Act of Parliament in 1973 Responsible for conservation of flora and fauna ,geological and physiographical features throughout Great Britain It establishes and maintains National Natural Reserves Gives advice and education on nature conservation and carries out research in to related topics It is financed by the Department of Environment The NCC has replaced the Natural Conservancy ,formed in 1949

Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) It is an Indian government ministry The ministry is responsible for planning, promoting ,coordinating and overseeing the implementation of envmtl and forestry programmes in the country The main activities undertaken by ministry include conservation and survey of the flora of India and fauna of India ,forests and other wilderness areas; prevention and control of pollution ;afforestaion ,and land degradation mitigation It is responsible for the administration of the national park of India
