Provide the missing word!

What is a comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification 9/10/2023 Sample Footer Text 5

In item number 1, which is night is to day as happy is to sad, the pairs show an opposite relationship, night is the opposite of day and happy is also the opposite of sad. And that type of analogy is called Antonyms.   Antonyms- a word that means the opposite of another word. Ex. Short is to tall as big is to small. ( short:tall :: big:small ) Ex. Beautiful is to ugly as soft is to hard. ( beautiful:ugly :: soft:hard )

What about item number 2? the pairs show a similar relationship or have the same meaning because husband and spouse have the same meaning as well as the second paired words which are baby and infant. It is called Synonyms. Synonyms-  word that has the same meaning as another word (or nearly the same meaning) . Ex. Pretty is to gorgeous as big is to gigantic ( pretty:gorgeous:big:gigantic ) Ex. Small is to tiny as night is to dark. ( small:tiny :: night:dark )

Let’s proceed to item number 3. What do you observe? The analogies contain words that are the causes, or the sources of some actions or conditions which are thirst and study and the other words that are the effects, or the results or consequences which are drink and good grades. And that type is called Cause and Effect.   Cause-and-effect describes   a relationship between actions or events in which at least one action or event is a direct result of the others .   For example,  a man offends his neighbor by insulting him (the cause).   His neighbor becomes angry (the effect  Example-if we eat too much food and do not exercise, we gain weight .   Ex. Study is to high score as practice is to mastery. ( study:high score:: practice:mastery ) Ex. Work is to earn as behave is to reward. ( work:earn :: behave: reward )

Then, let’s have item number 4. What does this analogy consist of? In this case, student and leaf are parts of classroom and tree. And we call this type of analogy as Part to whole.   Part to whole is a comparison between a part and a whole of one thing and how it is similar to a part and a whole of another thing . For example, when comparing one part of an item, such as a paw being part of a dog. You could make a similar comparison that a claw belongs to a bird   Ex. Tire is to car as to roof is to house. ( tire:car :: roof:house Ex.Petal is to flower as student is to classroom. ( petal:flower :: student:classroom )

And the last item is number 5. What do you notice with the compared words? If you say yes, then you are correct as sea and forest are locations for fish and lion. And that is called Location as a type of analogy.   Examples:  plane & hangar, dog & doghouse, tree & forest .   Fish is sea as lion is to zoo. ( fish:sea :: lion:zoo ) Teacher is to classroom as mother is to home.( teacher:classroom :: mother:home ) The analogy can be written in two forms.

Questions: What is analogy? What are the 5 types of analogy? Who can give examples of analogy?

Sauce soup cake

Direction: Choose the correct word to complete the analogy. Then, identify what type of analogy it is. Phone : talk :: television: watch/ hear/ walk 2. Classroom : teacher :: mother: house/ street/ sea 3. lawyer : court :: doctor: playfield /hospital / stage 4. fish : swimming:: bird: chirping / flying / diving 5. terrifying : frightening :: calm: joyful / peaceful / sad
