THE DANGER OF CIGARETTE SMOKING LESSON 1

GATEWAY DRUGS Such as cigarettes and alcohol are legal drugs that a non-drug user might try, which can lead him / her to more dangerous drugs such as marijuana and shabu.

NATIONAL YOUTH COMMISION (NYC) Two ( 2 ) out of five ( 5 ) Filipino teenagers aged 13 to 15 years old smoke cigarettes.

Health experts explained that the continuous increase in cigarette use and alcohol consumption by Filipino teenagers is due to very cheap price.

EFFECTS OF SMOKING ON THE BODY

TOBACCO Is a tall, leafy plant, originally grown in South and Central America , but now cultivated throughout the world.

TOBACCO American Indians smoked it for special religious occasions and medical purposes only.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO ) Tobacco smoking and chewing is the second leading cause of death around the world.

TOBACCO Each time a person puffs a cigarette or chew tobacco, more than 4,000 chemicals come into his/her contact.

TOBACCO In studies conducted, 43 of these chemicals are known CARCINOGENS –are substances which cause cancer.

NICOTINE Nicotine the addictive drug found in tobacco products like cigarettes is a poisonous stimulant. A stimulant drug increases the Central Nervous System ( CNS )

CNS The Central Nervous System controls all body organs like the heart , lungs and brain .

THREE SMOKES PRODUCED BY SMOKE Mainstream Smoke Sidestream Smoke Third-hand smoke

Mainstream Smoke Refers specially to the smoke that a smoker directly inhale.

Sidestream Smoke The smoke that comes out of a lighted end of a cigarette or pipe. This is more dangerous than mainstream smoke.

Third-hand Smoke Smoke left for a long time on sofa, beddings, pillow and other objects.

The ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) classifies second-hand smoke as a Group A carcinogen. This means that cigarette smoke has substances known to cause cancer to humans.

POLICIES AND LAWS REAGRDING CIGARETTE SMOKING Republic Act No. 9211 , otherwise known as The Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 is the law governing tobacco production, distribution, and use.

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9211 Section 5. Smoking Ban in Public Places. Smoking shall be absolutely prohibited in the following public places: Centers of Youth Elevators Locations in which fire hazards are present Within the public buildings Public conveyances and public facilities Food preparation areas

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9211 Section 9. Minimum Age Sales – under this Act, it shall be unlawful Any retailer of tobacco products to sell or distribute tobacco products to any minor (person below 18 years of age)

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9211 Section 10. Sale of Tobacco Products within School Perimeters – the sale or distribution of tobacco products us prohibited within one hundred (100) meters from school or playground.

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 8749 Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 – smoking inside a public building or an enclosed public place including public vehicles and other means of transportations.

Lesson II THE DANGERS OF ALCOHOL

Answer the following Questions: What is an alcohol? What kinds of alcohol do you know? Is it safe to drink different varieties of alcohol? What are the effects of drinking alcohol?

3 TYPES OF ALCOHOL METHANOL ISOPROPANOL ETHANOL

METHANOL I s a toxic alcohol that is used industrially as a solvent, pesticide, and alternative fuel source.

ISOPROPANOL Found in antifreezes, glass cleaners, jewelry cleaner, stain removers, deicers, household disinfectants, and hand sanitizers.

ETHANOL A s a topical agent to prevent skin infections, in pharmaceutical preparations (e.g. rubbing compounds, lotions, tonics, colognes), cosmetics, and in perfumes

EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLIC DRINKS When alcohol enters the bloodstream , it goes in all parts of the body. The main effect of alcohol drinking reflects on a person’s central nervous system (CNS).

EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLIC DRINKS The CNS controls one’s mental processes, memory, speech, learning, and decision-making.

EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLIC DRINKS The amount of alcohol that entered in the bloodstream at a certain period can be measured in percentages through blood-alcohol concentration (BAC).

EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLIC DRINKS A 0.3 – 0.5 percent BAC could lead to coma, brain damages and death .

ALCOHOLICS A person is alcoholic when he / she starts drinking obsessively and compulsively without his /her control.

TOLERANCE An alcoholic person regularly drinks alcohol with or without friends as a result he or she was not able to sleep and eat properly.

DEPENDENCE Because of this effects, the alcoholic decided to go back to drinking alcohol, to eat and sleep properly again

CIRRHOSIS Due to excessive drinking the alcoholic developed fatty liver that caused the organ to malfunction.

BRAIN DAMAGE The alcoholic is now admitted in the ICU and in coma. It cannot talk and move anymore. CNS is damaged already. And worst developed liver diseases .
