Lesson objective: at the end of the lesson, students should be able to: a. relate art elements and principles of design applied in the design of Southeast Asian (MALAYSIAN) arts crafts, accessories, body ornamentation, and everyday objects.

Malaysian Wau Kite Wau kite are popular in Malaysia . Its wings are similar to an Arabic letter that pronounced as “wow” This kite making traditions comes naturally to the Malaysian people particularly those in the eastern states of the Malaysian Peninsula

Traditionally, the farmers use to kites as scarecrows in the fields. they also use it as a means to lull their children to sleep, so that they could work with little interruptions

Nowadays, Kite flying has been an important part of their culture and is now considered a sport not just in Malaysia, but also internationally. Malaysia celebrating kite festivals which is one of the country's best tourist attractions.

FIVE TYPES OF WAU KITES

WAU BULAN this is also known as the “Moon Kite” since the crescent-shaped sail looks like a moon in the sky. this is also considerd as one of Malaysia's national symbols.

WAU JALA BUDI This is also known as the “Woman kite” because of its shape. Jala means “net” and refers to the tail sructure.

WAU KUCHING This is also knwon as th “cat kite”. When viewed from the backside, there is a similarly to a sitting cat.

WAU BARAT This is also known as the “leaf kite”. this kind of kite is able to stay up in lighter winds than the other designs.

WAU MERAK This is also known as the “peacock kite” This has a tail as compared to other kites with a lower sail. this kind of wau kite originated in Sulawesi, Indonesian.

This visual components of lines, shapes, forms, space, colors, and texture are evidents in the different wau kite designs. The artists carefully follow the principles of balance in distributing the visual weight or stability of the wau kites.

THE PRINCIPLES OF ART are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural elements of designs. the way these priciples are applied affects the expressive content or the message of the work.
