Gravity
and
Laws of
Motion

Sir Issac Newton 1643-1727
English mathematician
and physicist
Laws of MOTION
1. Law of Inertia
2. Force = Mass x
Acceleration
3. Equal and
Opposite
Reaction

Newton’s First Law
1. The first law of motion states that
an object at rest will remain at rest.
And an object will continue moving
unless acted upon by an outside
force. This law is called the This law is called the Law of Law of
InertiaInertia..

NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF
MOTIONMOTION
A body at rest or in
motion will remain at
rest or in uniform
motion unless some
outside force is
applied to it.
Often referred to as
the”law of inertia”.

Newton’s Second Law
2. The change in an object’s motion
depends on its mass and the force acting
upon it.
Force = Mass x Acceleration
Force - Push or Pull exerted on an object.
Mass - The amount of matter in an object.
Acceleration - The rate at which the speed
changes.

NEWTON’S SECOND LAW NEWTON’S SECOND LAW
OF MOTIONOF MOTION
The change in an
object’s motion
depends on its
mass and the force
acting upon it.
F = ma
One of the most famous
formulas in our world.

Newton’s Third Law
3. With every action there is an With every action there is an
equal and opposite reaction.equal and opposite reaction.

NEWTON'S THIRD LAW OF NEWTON'S THIRD LAW OF
MOTIONMOTION
To every action
force there is an
equal and opposite
reaction. Sometimes
called the law of
momentum.

What is gravity?
Gravity – the force that pulls objects
toward the center of the Earth.
The amount of
gravitational force
depends upon the mass
of the objects and the
distance between the
objects.

Guess your weight on Mars!
This website will tell you how
much you would weigh if you
were on any of the other
planets.

Gravity continued…
 Law of Universal
Gravitation

This law states
that the force of
Gravity acts
between all
objects in the
universe.

Who are you attracted
to??
Maybe not
Romantically by
definitely
Gravitationally!
Two bodies are attracted
to each other due to
their mass and the
distance between them.

Why don’t we always feel a
gravitational attraction?
In order for a
gravitational
attraction to be felt
the mass of one of
the bodies must be
very large. The earth
is many times more
massive than you
are. You can sense
the Force of
Attraction.

Earth Orbit and Gravity

Which way did it go?
Better watch
out for the
cops!
