Gravity Settling Chambers
•Air pollution control, the techniques employed to reduce or eliminate the emission into the
atmosphere of substances that can harm the environment or human health.
• The control of air pollution is one of the principal areas of pollution control, along
withwastewater
•treatment, solid-waste management, and hazardous-wastemanagement.
Gravity Settling Chambers
•It is simplest type of equipment used for collection of particulates.
•It consist of a chamber in which a carrier gas velocity is reduced so as to allow
the particulates to settle out of the moving stream under the action of gravity.
Gravity Settling Chambers
•Settling chambershave beenusedto prevent excessive abrasion and dust
loading in primary collection devices by removing large particles from the gas
stream, such as either very high dust loadings or extremely coarse particles
which might damage a downstream collector in series with thesettling chamber.
Gravity Settling Chambers
•The simplest particulate control deviceisasettling chamber, a largechamberin
which the gas velocityisslowed, allowing theparticlestosettleout bygravity.
•Particles that experience a force, either due togravityor due to centrifugal
motionwilltend to move in a uniform manner in the direction exerted by that
force.
•Forgravity settling, this means that the particleswilltend to fall to the bottom
of the vessel, forming a slurry at the vessel base.
Gravity Settling Chambers
•The velocity must be sufficiently low , less than 3m/s.
•The velocity less than 0.5 m/s is giving good results.
•The 10 µ size particle is collected .
Applications
•used as pre-cleaners.
•food and metallurgical industries as the first step in dust control.
•pre-cleaners can also reduce the maintenance cost of high efficiency
control equipment, which is more subject to abrasive deterioration.
