My Greece
Emilia Dylikowska
Greece is a beautiful country that impresses
both with its natural and cultural scene.
This country has a rich history and a vast
cultural heritage, preserved in its architecture,
art, and literature. It is considered the
successor of ancient Greece. As such, it is the
cradle of all Western civilization.
In Greece, you will find many unique
monuments, wonderful beaches, islands, and
wild mountains. Thanks to its diverse cuisine,
exceptional people, and stunning views, Greece
is an incredible country truly worth visiting.
In the following slides, I want to present some
lesser and more well-known facts about
Greece.
The official name of Greece is the Hellenic Republic, but to this day, the Greeks call their
country “Hellas” or “Ellada,” and they call themselves “Hellenes.” This is connected to the
Greeks' deep attachment to mythology, which has intertwined with their history and
tradition for hundreds of years.
Greece is located in the southeastern part of
Europe, at the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula.
In addition to the mainland, Greece consists of
around 2500 islands, of which 165 are inhabited.
The most famous and most
visited by tourists are:
-Crete
-Rhodes
-Corfu
-Santorini
-Samos
-Zakynthos
-Kos
Athens, the city rising from the ashes–
Greece's capital was almost completely
rebuilt in the 19th century after gaining
independence from the Ottoman
Empire. Athens’ origins date back 3400
years. This makes the Greek capital one
of the oldest cities in the world!
Moreover, Athens has been continuously
inhabited for at least 7000 years, and
today, one-third of Greece’s population
lives there.
You speak Greek and don’t even know it!
The Greek language has contributed to the entire world, as a large number of words come from Greek. For
example, words like economy, academy, school, poem and decade, alphabet.
Currently, the Greek currency is the euro, since January 1 2002. The
previous currency, since ancient times, was the drachma, a word that
meant “handful.” It was a silver coin first minted around 650 BC, making
it the oldest currency in Europe.
In Greece, there is a tradition similar to the one in Poland–name days are celebrated instead of
birthdays. The Greeks have a calendar of saint names, and each day of the year is dedicated to a
Christian saint or martyr.
According to tradition,
when someone is named
after one of these saints,
that saint’s day becomes
their “name day.”
The Greek island of Ikaria is one of the five “Blue Zones” in the world, meaning that a
higher-than-usual number of people live significantly longer than average. In other words,
it is a region where a large number of people live to be 100 years old.
This island is located about
50 km from the western
coast of Turkey. It is called
“the island where people
forget to die” due to its high
percentage of centenarians.
The first Olympic Games were held in
Greece, over 2600 years ago, in 776 BC in
Olympia. The tradition of the Games lasted
until 393 AD and was revived during the first
modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, in
1896.

Democracy was born in Greece between the 6th and 5th centuries BC in Athens.
It is a system of government, and the word comes from Greek, meaning “rule of the people.” Citizens of Athens
could decide on state matters, and those citizens were all free men born in Athens.
Greece is considered the country with
the most archaeological museumsin
the world.
There are 12 popular museums just on
Crete, and in Athens alone, there are
over 40 museums and about 10
archaeological monuments. Greece is
home to 18 UNESCO World Heritage
sites, including the Acropolis, Mount
Athos, the Old Town of Corfu, and the
medieval city of Rhodes.
Greece has two beaches with pink sand–
Elafonisi and Balos on Crete. Legend has it that on
Holy Saturday in 1824, Turks massacred many
women and children seeking refuge on the island.
The beach was covered with a large amount of blood,
and since then, the sand has turned pink. However,
the fact is that the color of the sand results from
mixing coral and shell fragments with the sand.
Greece is one of the world's largest producers of olives, producing over 430 000 tons
of olive oil annually. It is also known as the country with the highest olive oil
consumption in the world. Olive oil is used not only for food but also for cosmetic
purposes.
In Greece, meals are more than just food–they
are a celebration of life, love, and friendship.
No Greek feast is complete without the iconic pita
bread, spicy tzatziki, salty feta cheese, and sweet
baklava.
Greeks love coffee, which for them is not just a
drink but a whole ritual and practice deeply rooted
in their culture, and they can enjoy it for hours.
Thank you for your attention!
