Green concrete PRESENTATION BY SAMATA PAUL

CONTENTS PG – 1 PG – 2 PG – 3, 4, 5, 6 PG – 7 PG – 8 PG – 9, 10 PG – 11 PG – 12 PG – 13

INTRODUCTION : GREEN CONCRETE Green concrete is a revolutionary topic in the history of concrete Industry. Green concrete was first invented in DENMARK in 1998. Green concrete is much like the conventional concrete but the production of such concrete requires minimum amount of energy and causes less harm to the environment . However, it should be remembered that green concrete has nothing to do with the color green. Green concrete was first invented by Dr. W.G. in the year 1998 . PG – 1

DEFINITION OF GREEN CONCRETE : Green concrete can be defined as a concrete with materials as a partial or complete replacement for cement or fine aggregate or coarse aggregate. The substituition material can be waste or residual products from the manufacturing process . It uses less energy in its production and produces less carbon dioxide than conventional types of concrete. Hence, green concrete has huge impact on sustainability. It is environment friendly and energy saving and has less adverse effects on life than conventional concrete. PG – 2

MATERIALS REQUIRED IN GREEN CONCRETE : 1) Coarse Aggregate : Fresh Local Aggregate Recycled Demolition Waste Aggregate Recycled Concrete Material ( RCM ) Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag ( GGBFS ) DEMOLITION WASTE BLAST FURNACE SLAG Fresh local aggregate can be found from quarrys . Aggregates of both high quality like basalt , dolomite & low quality can be used in appropriate mix design to get concrete of lower characteristic strength. all materials should be locally available, salvaged, refurnished or re – manufactured, reusable or recyclable . RECYCLED CONCRETE PG – 3

Construction industry produces huge waste called demolition waste or MALWA. It is estimated tat per capita waste generation generally ranges from 0.4 kg to 0.8 kg per day per person. In order to have sustainability of resources, this demolition waste must be recycled and used. Blast furnace slag is a non – metallic co – product produced in the process of steel production. It is a waste product from the manufacture of pig iron. BFS primarily consists of silicates, aluminates and calcium – alumina – silicates. In India, more than 10 million tons of BFS is produced every year. PG – 4

2) Fine Aggregate : Fresh River Sand Manufactured Sand Recycled Glass Aggregate 3) Fly Ash : Some of the technical benefits of using fly ash in concrete are as follows : Fly ash is the most important component of green concrete. Use of good quality fly ash has shown remarkable improvement in the durability of structures in aggressive environment . FLY ASH FRESH RIVER SAND MANUFACTURED SAND Manufactured sand (M-Sand) is artificial sand produced from crushing hard stones into small sand-sized angular shaped particles, washed and finely graded to be used as construction aggregate. It is an alternative to River Sand used for construction purposes. It is produced from hard granite stone by crushing. PG – 5

RECYCLED GLASS AGGREGATES MARBLE POWDER SILICA FUME Silica fume and marble powder can also be used in the production of green concrete. Benefits of using Recycled glass aggregate are: Less use of natural aggregates resulting in minimal cost of quarrying , less use of non-renewable natural resources. Recycle that part of glass that would otherwise end up in landfills and thus greater eco-sustainability throughout the production cycle . More architectural value of mortars/concretes since the visible colored glass particles will produce a pleasing visual effect on the surfaces where the mortar is applied. These mortars/concretes, due to their aesthetical properties, can satisfy not only traditional properties but also decorative functions for fair-faced concrete finishes, both in external and indoor applications . PG – 6

SUITABILITY OF GREEN CONCRETE IN STRUCTURES : Reduces crane age load ; allow handling, lifting, flexibility with lighter weight . Reduces the dead weight of structures from 5 tons to about 3.5 tons . Better thermal and fire resistance than conventional concrete. Better sound insulation than conventional concrete. Reduction of concrete industry’s carbon dioxide emission by 30 % . Increase in concrete industry’s use of waste products by 20 % . Green concrete requires less maintainance and repairs . PG – 7

APPLICATIONS OF GREEN CONCRETE : Following are the major applications of green concrete : It is used in the construction of bridges and dams . It is widely used in the construction of residential, commercial and industrial buildings components . It is used in the construction of columns . It can also be used in construction of roads and pavements . Green concrete can be used on roads and streets to help manage storm water runoff and prevent erosion . . BRIDGES AND DAMS MADE OF GREEN CONCRETE ROAD CONSTRUCTION WITH GREEN CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION OF COLUMNS PG – 8

Advantages of green concrete : Green concrete gains strength at a much faster rate than conventional concrete and it has low shrinkage rate . So, it has better chance at surviving the fire and greater resistance to corrosion. The habit of using and recycling industrial and construction waste is developed instead of letting the waste materials simply deteriorate and decay . 1) LONGER LIFE SPAN 2) USE OF INDUSTRIAL WASTE CORROSION INDUSTRIAL WASTE PG – 9

On an average, the production of conventional concrete emits 5 % to 8 % of total CO2 production in the world. Whereas the production of green concrete releases nearly 80 % less CO2 . This is much more environment friendly . One will use less energy if they are using green concrete having less Portland cement and more fly ash . 3) REDUCTION IN AMOUNT OF CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSION 4) REDUCTION IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION Green concrete helps reduce pollution PG – 10

LIMITATIONS OF GREEN CONCRETE : Increase in reinforcement cost. Lesser split tension compared to conventional concrete. Structures made of green concrete may have a short lifespan in some cases. Compressive strength may vary with the change of green materials Water absorption of green concrete is high. Flexural strength is less in green concrete. Compressive strength  refers to the capacity of a material or structure to withstand loads that tend to reduce its size. In other words, it is the ability of a material to resist compression forces. Definition : Compressive strength is the maximum compressive stress that a given solid material can sustain without fracturing under a gradually applied load. LIMITATIONS OF GREEN CONCRETE : PG – 11

First residential project with green concrete in asia : Singapore – Amerald Land has unveiled its eco – friendly condominium project called Gala which is constructed entirely from green concrete and complies with the Building and Construction Authority ( BCA ) Green mark platinum standards. Launched on May 2012, Amerald Land said it was produced with the motive of promoting construction productivity and sustainable construction materials and methods. Gala comprises of 28 exclusive freehold units located at 33 Jalan Dusun. Gala is projected to result in energy savings of US$960.61 per household per year, 3995 kilo watt of electricity and water savings of 83,000 litre per household per year. PG – 12

Conclusion : From the factors mentioned previously, green concrete is a great substitute for conventional concrete as it is more sustainable and it helps to recycle the waste disposals of concrete. However, nowadays we simply cannot abandon concrete since it is easy to make and very cheap. Using the green concrete should first produce concrete and then wait until it has to be abandoned, which will take decades. So, as the time passes, maybe there will be a more effective and efficient way to deal with this cycle but as of now, green concrete is a great testament of sustainable building material . It makes our society for environment friendly. PG – 13
