TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction ‘What is greenhouse?’ can be found in this topic. Mainly intended to introduce listners to thr topic How does it occur? Step wise process of greenhouse effect History P eople to discover greenhouse effect Greenhouse gases Introduction to greenhouse gases with examples 01 03 02 04 05 07 06 Causes 08 09 Major reasons of increasing greenhouse effect You can describe the topic of the section here How are humans impacting greenhouse effect? Types of greenhouse Effects Human Impact Mitigating measures of G.E Impact on earth brought by G.E 10 Importance How is it useful for life Measures that can be taken to reduce excess greenhouse effect

INTRODUCTION The greenhouse effect is the process by which radiation from a planet's atmosphere warms the planet's surface to a temperature above what it would be without this atmosphere.

History It was discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1824 AD. But it was first investigated by  Svante Arrhenius in 1896 AD. He claimed that fossil fuel combustion may eventually result in enhanced global warming. He found that the average surface temperature of the earth is about 15°C because of the infrared absorption capacity of water vapor and carbon dioxide. Arrhenius suggested that a doubling of carbon dioxide concentration would lead to a 5°C temperature raise.

How does it occur? Step-wise process on how greenhouse effect occurs: Solar radiations reach earth’s atmosphere and some get reflected back Remaining energy is absorbed by earth and heat is rediated. Rediated heat captured by the greenhouse gases by not letting it escape from earth’s atmosphere Trapped heat keep the eath warm enough to sustain life.

Greenhouse gases They are the gases that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation. Primary greenhouse gases in earth's atmosphere: water vapor (H 2 O), carbon Dioxide (CO 2  ) Methane (CH 4 ), Nitrous Oxide (N 2 O), CFC(s). Their over emission causes global warming. High concentration of greenhouse gases in atmosphere makes Venus the hottest planet of solar system. FUN FACT

Causes Burning of fossil fuel Burning of fossil fuels like wood, petrol etc releases nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, etc. in atmosphere Deforestation It increases the concentration of CO 2 in atmosphere be ca use plants take in CO 2 an Gives O 2 Industrial waste and landfills Smoke released from industries and gases like methane released from waste products in landfills increases greenhouse gases

1) Artificial greenhouse It is created by humans. The transparent glass allows the radiation to pass through and traps the radiations by not letting them escape. It occupies a relatively small area. It creates the heating effect only in a specific area. 2) Natural greenhouse It is created naturally. The greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap solar radiations to warm the earth’s surface. It occupies a larger area. It creates the heating effect in the whole earth. Types of Greenhouse Fig: Artificial greenhouse Inside the greenhouse Outer view of greenhouse

N egative Effects of Greenhouse Global warming Increase in greenhouse effect causes the raise in earth’s temperature Depletion of ozone layer Ozone layer depletion causes increased UV radiation levels at the Earth's surface, which is damaging to human health. Decrease in water resources Due to fast rate of melting snow, regular water resources like river, ponds, etc. are decreasing. Melting of glaicers and snow Climate change due to greenhouse effect rises temperature and snow of mountains and polar regions.

Human Impact Human activities are changing Earth's natural greenhouse effect. Burning fossil fuels like coal and oil puts more carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. It has been  observed the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and some other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. Too much of these greenhouse gases can cause Earth's atmosphere to trap more and more heat. This causes Earth to warm up. 2.32°F That’s how much higher Earth’s average temperature was in 2020 compared to the late 1800s. Fun Fact

Over greenhouse effect is harmful.. So, some mitigating measures of greenhouse effect are: Just like a glass greenhouse, Earth's greenhouse is also full of plants! Plants can help to balance the greenhouse effect on Earth. Reduce the use of old vehicles. Use of alternative sources of energy; it can reduce the excess emission of greenhouse gases. Phasing out the use of fluorinated greenhouse gases (F gases) that are extremely harmful to the climate. Mitigating measures of G.E

Importance of Greenhouse Effect Fun Fact Without some greenhouse gases and the Greenhouse Effect, Earth’s temperature would be close to -18°C . It maintains the temperature of earth during night time. It is the reason of survival of many animals as well as plants.

Did you know? Since 1870, global sea levels have risen by about 8 inches. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Types: Natural and Artificial Greenhouse effect is useful as well as harmful . Over emission of CFC(s) causes adverse effects. Discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1824 AD. Major effect is Global Warming Artificial greenhouse effect can be used in farming Key Points
