Green living: A Lifestyle With Low Carbon Footprint OHSE media content by RusselSmith

What is Green Living? “WE DO NOT INHERIT THE EARTH FROM OUR ANCESTORS, WE BORROW IT FROM OUR CHILDREN .” – NATIVE AMERICAN PROVERB Going green is a personal choice that is embraced by individuals to contribute towards the betterment of this planet and make this place a better place to live for future generations to come.

What is Green Living? Green Living  is a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual's or society's use of the earth's natural resources and personal resources. Practitioners of  sustainable living  often attempt to reduce their carbon footprint by altering methods of transportation, energy consumption, and diet.

What is Carbon Footprint? When talking about climate change,  footprint  is a metaphor for the total impact that something has. And  carbon  is a shorthand for all the different greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. The term  carbon footprint , therefore, is a shorthand to describe the best estimate that we can get of the full climate change impact of something. That something could be anything – an activity, an item, a lifestyle, a company, a country or even the whole world. A  carbon footprint is the measure of the environmental impact of a particular individual or organization's lifestyle or operation, measured in units of carbon dioxide .

Carbon Footprint is composed of two parts: Primary Footprint: is the sum of the direct carbon dioxide emissions of burning of fossil fuels, like domestic energy consumption by furnaces and waters heaters, and transportation, like automobiles and airplane travel Secondary Footprint: The secondary footprint is the sum of indirect emissions associated with the manufacture and breakdown of all products, services and food an individual or business consumes. What is Carbon Footprint?

Effects of Carbon Footprint Greenhouse Gas Emission Climate Change - Ozone layer depletion Shrinking water supply Increasing incidents of Severe Weather Geographical Changes Depletion of Resources Electricity supply Health Challenges Cost

Practical Ways To Go Green Switch off air-conditioners, TVs, cellphone chargers, light bulbs, when not in use –if leaving the room for more than 10 minutes Use Energy saving bulbs Use cooking gas instead of Kerosene Plant a tree Recycle shopping bag Recycle everything Walk for short distances Carpool Paperless bills Support going green products

Everyday Greener Thinking Turn off light switch at night Always check water connection regularly Reduce use of microwave Use ceramic wares and less of disposable cups/plates Instead of trashing old cloths, give out to less privileged

Conclusion The Right Attitude … For every change we plan to embark on, having the right attitude is the first step. Let’s make up our mind to watch our footprints in the environment
