Grice’s Maxims
We maintain some principles in a conversation ‘Co-operative Principle’ by Paul Grice (1975) Four principles/maxims
Maxim of Quality A: Why did you come late? B: Because of traffic ( lying ).
B could have answered: Because I was not able to get up early. ( truth )
According to Maxim of Quality: Do not say what you believe to be false. Do not say that for which you lack adequate evidence
Maxim of Quantity A: Who is your favorite writer? B: Edgar Allan Poe
Well, I’m sure, you know that I read lots of books. But, in case of my favorite, um… it’s Edgar Allan Poe.
Maxim of Quantity Says: Do not make your contribution more informative than is required. Make your contribution as informative as is required
Maxim of Relation A: Can you please lend me some money? B: Oh, it’s too hot today.
Maxim of Relevance A: Is he handsome? B: He’s kind.
So- Be relevant
Maxim of Manner A(over phone): How can I meet you quickly? B: Run, and get a bus.
If B would say: Get a bus, and run!
Maxim of Manner advises: Be orderly. Avoid obscurity of expression. Avoid ambiguity. Be brief (avoid unnecessary prolixity).
Flouting or Exploitation Violation of the maxims for the sake of smooth communication
Flouting of Quality A: Do you have a ballpen? B: I don’t have one.
Flouting of Quantity A: Can we have a cup of tea? B: Sure. We may have something more if you want.
Flouting of Relevance Mother: Have you done your homework? Sun: My bicycle is broken, mom.
Flouting of Manner Wife: Good morning, class! Husband: Uy! Good morning dira, sir!
Grice’s Maxims and the floutings both may seem necessary depending on the type of conversation. So, for a better conversation the most important thing is your knack, i.e. how you can handle the situation.
