A Predictive Correlation Study of the Relationship Grit on Positive , Self reliance, and Life Satisfaction: A Longitudinal Study
1. Introduction Life satisfaction is greatly influenced by the more valued areas of an individual's life. It is an assumption that undergraduate students lay a great deal of importance on their overall undergraduate experience. William James (1907) encouraged psychologists to address two broad problems: ( i ), what are the kinds of human abilities and, (ii), by what diverse means do individuals unleash these abilities? People know more about IQ, than any other stable person difference. People know little about why, most people make use of only a small part of their resources, whereas a few exceptional individuals push themselves to their limits.
2. Literature Review Grit (Hasan et al., 2020) shows the importance of considering the cultural context of a study sample while analyzing grit in relation to other constructs. Grit term generally used to describe the ability to persevere through hardships to meet goals. Grit define as perseverance and passion for long-term goals” (Duckworth et al., 2007). Grit has been found to be associated with academic performance and professional success independent of IQ. It compared to intelligence and academic performance, is the most reliable predictor of personal success (Duckworth and colleagues, 2007). Continue…
Literature Review Galton (1892) report that ability alone, did not bring about success, and high achievers to be triply blessed by “ability combined with zeal and with capacity for hard labor” (p. 33). Reliable and valid measures of IQ have made it possible to document a wide range of achievement outcomes affected by IQ ( Kuncel , Hezlett , & Ones,2001). Weisskirch (2016) suggests that individuals who feel good and use effective strategies tend to cultivate more passion and perseverance in long-term goals. Moreover, researchers have found that consistency of interests and perseverance of efforts, generate success and happiness for individuals ( Vainio & Daukantaite , 2016).
3. Problem Statement Most studies take a perspective from Western culture and developed countries to investigate the effect of Grit on life and education success. The multitude of possible factors for this relative scarcity of data comprise the terminological fuzziness and the measurement difficulties in restricting non-cognitive psychological skills. Due to the subjective nature of the concept ‘ Grit and life satisfaction’, it becomes increasingly difficult to study all factors that affect them. However, it is possible to study the relationship of different factors with Grit and life satisfaction. Although previous studies have accumulated great knowledge, some issues remain underexplored. For example, although prior theoretical research has indicated that individuals’ grit predicts life satisfaction, little research has empirically examined the underlying mechanism between them. Few studies have conducted these problems from the perspective of gender differences in developing countries.
4. Hypothesis H1. Grit and its subscales have positively predict, direct and indirect effects on psychological capital ( PsyCap ) with mediate by resilience. H2. Grit and its subscales should positively predict, direct and indirect effects on flourishing with mediate by resilience. H3. Grit and its subscales have positively predicted direct and indirect effects on self-reliance with the mediational role of resilience. H4. Grit and its subscales have strong positively predicted, direct and indirect effects on self-reliance with the mediational role of resilience. H5. Grit and its subscales have positively predicted direct and indirect effects on life satisfaction with the mediational role of resilience. H6. Psychological capital ( PsyCap ) and its subscales have positive relations with life satisfaction. Continue…
10. Theoretical Framework The study on grit is still evolving, this study will provide a new view on how grit fits into existing literature and theoretical models while also serving a unique purpose within the current literature around psychosocial aspects. To guide the data analysis for the current study, we will devise the following theoretical model to reveal the relationships between grit and resilience, PsyCap , flourishing, self-reliance, and life satisfaction (see Figure 1).
