4. The Definition of Deixis Yule Renkema Levinson Logo Yule (1996, p. 9), deixis is a technical term (from Greek) for one of the most basic things we do with utterances. Renkema (1993, p. 76) says that deixis deals with the connections between the discourse and the situation in which a discourse is used. The word deixis means "to show" or "to indicate". In pragmatics, deixis describes words or expressions of which the reference relies absolutely on context (Levinson, 1992)
