The Ottoman empire was founded by Osman I – son of Ertugrul Gazi. Ertugrul’s work and the efforts he made in terms of territorial expansion formed the very foundation of the future Ottoman state. Fracticide – murder of brothers Millet System – a community structure that gave minority groups a limited amount of power to control their own affairs while still under the Ottoman rule. Devshirme – conquered Christians were required to give up 20% of their male children to the state. Religion – diverse religion (Islam, Christianity, Judaism). It was too agrarian. the Ottoman Empire didn’t have the industrial might to produce heavy weaponry, munitions and iron and steel needed to build railroads to support the war effort.nnnnnnnn It wasn’t cohesive enough. The various peoples who were part of the empire grew more and more rebellious, and by the 1870s, the empire had to allow Bulgaria and other countries to become independent and ceded more and more territory. Other countries deliberately weakened it. Russia and Austria both supported rebellious nationalists in the Balkans to further their influence. The Sultan and his wives lived in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. The Sultan would move to a different room in the Palace every night because he was afraid of being assassinated. Suleiman the magnificent was considered the earthly leader of all Muslims. He was called “The Lawgiver” by the Ottomans. The Republic of Turkey was founded by revolutionary Kemal Ataturk. The elite battle troops of the Sultan were selected from Christian families at a young age. They were considered slaves but were treated well and paid a regular salary.
