What is
Handball?
Handball is a team sport in
which two teams of seven
players each pass a ball
using their hands with the
aim of throwing it into the
goal of the opposing team.

History of Handball
Game like handball have been
around since ancient Egypt
and Rome, and handball has
been an Olympic sport since
1936. Modern indoor handball
was developed and gained
popularity during the second
half of the 20th century.

Modern handball was first played
towards the end of the 19th century.
The real impulses emanated from
Denmark, Germany and Sweden.
The founding fathers of field
handball were probably German
physical education experts who
gained recognition for field
handball as a separate sport at the
turn of the century, based on the
games of “Raffball” (‘snatch ball’)
and “Königsbergerball” (Konrad
Koch 1846-1911)
In Sweden it was G. Wallström who
introduced his country to a certain
sport named “handball” in 1910.

The sport’s international governing body was first formed in 1928 as the
Federation Internationale Handball Amateur, and took its current name in
Copenhagen, Denmark in 1946 as the International Handball Federation (IHF).
The IHF’s first president was Avery Brundage – an American who went on to
become president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Who invented Handball?
No one person invented handball or made it an official sport.
However, three men are credited with writing the rules of
handball that are still officially used today: Max Heizer, Karl
Schelenz, and Erich Konigh
The set of rules created by these three
men in 1917 is considered to be the birth
of handball. Also, the year that the first
official handball game was played,
making these three the most likely
inventors of modern handball.

When was Handball
invented?
In 1928, handball was established as a sport by the
International Amateur Handball Federation.
In 1936, men's field handball was added to the
Olympics.
In 1972, indoor handball was first played at the
Olympics.
In 1976, the first instance of women's Olympic handball
in Montreal.
The IHF Women's Handball Championship begin in
1957.

Which country started Handball?
Handball has origins in many different countries, and the first evidence of handball goes
back to ancient times.
Handball like sports were played in Ancient Egypt.
The women of the Roman Empire played a game similar to handball called
'expulsim ludere'.
There were other handball-like games played in Medieval France and Scotland,
including by monarchs such as King James I, who as a devoted fan of the game.
By the 19th Century, handball was being played in European and Scandinavian
countries such as Germany, Scandinavia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
The first games of Olympic handball were played in 1936 in Berlin.
In 1946, the International Handball Federation was formed in Denmark.

Handball Olympics History
Handball first appeared as "field handball" during the 1936 Berlin Summer
Olympics, with the gold medal won by Germany on their home turf. Field
handball and indoor handball were both popular of the sport in the mid-20th
century, but the indoor version emerged as the more popular of the two by
1966.
Indoor handball was played as an unofficial sport in the Olympics prior to its
official introduction in 1972. Field handball was later played as a
demonstrations sport in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, but it never
returned as an official event.
The first competition was won by Yugoslavia.
A women's indoor handball competition was added at the 1976 Summer
Games in Montreal

Evolution of ball in
Handball
During the 1890s in the United States, play
began with a soft ball—usually a tennis ball
with the outer covering removed. This ball was
used in smaller four-wall courts in the New York
City area. Then young players began using this
larger ball outdoors against the solid wall of a
building. The use of the soft ball spread to other
cities, mostly for four-wall play. Dissatisfaction
with the large, slow ball led to development of
a smaller gas-filled ball that proved to be more
acceptable to players and stimulated new
interest in the game.

The first official
handball match was
played in 1917 in
Germany. Karl Schelenz
modified the rules in
1919. The first
international games
were played (under
these rules) with men in
1925 (between Germany
and Belgium) and with
women in 1930
(between Germany and
Austria)
