A. STATISTICAL ESTIMATION Reporters: Redelyn D. Flores Jonaly P. Salazar

COURSE TOPICS A. Statistical estimation Population and Sample Parameter and Statistics Sampling Methods or Techniques Probability and Non- Probability Sampling Sampling Error

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES: Estimate a population proportion from a sample proportion. Familiarize the different sampling Methods.

1. POPULATION AND SAMPLE *The term population is used in statistics to represent all possible measurements or outcomes that are of interest to us in a particular study or piece of analysis. *The term sample refers to a subset of the population that is selected for analysis.

1. POPULATION AND SAMPLE *Collecting data from your population takes a lot of effort. Aside of impractically due to large number of data to consider, it is also time consuming and costly. *In this way, you will save effort, time and resources in conducting your study. *It will not just save you time and effort but also the money that you will spend in running the study.

Population or sample Let’s Try! Identify which item in each column is the population and the sample. Write P if the item is a population and S if the item is a sample. 1 ______NCR _______ Manila 2 ______Tablespoon of sugar _______ Jar of sugar 3 ______STEM students _______ Academic Track students 4 ______Juice in a Pitcher _______ Juice in a glass 5 ______All manufactured _______ model units of cellular phone cellular phones P P P P P S S S S S

2 . Parameter and statistic * Parameter - a measure that describes a population. The average that comes from the population. Example: 1.The Philippine Senate is composed of 24 Senators. 2.Jupiter has 67 confirmed moons. * Statistic - a measure that describes a sample. The average that comes from the sample. Example: 1.The manager randomly selected 35 employees to participate in the Sports Fest 2.In a phone survey of 100 random homes in a country, 21% of families had garages.

Parameter or statistic Let’s Try! Tell whether the given is a Parameter or Statistic : 1. The average weight of all males in the Philippines. 2 . The average height of 100 cats in Pasig. 3 . The average test scores of 20 students in a class of 500. 4 . The average of daily allowance of all students in a class. 5 . Based on a sample of 900 elementary students, it was found out that 30% of them could not do long division. Parameter Parameter Statistic Statistic Statistic

3. Sampling methods and techniques How will I select my sample? It is a method of taking sample from a population . Sampling Techniques Probability Sampling a. Random Sampling b. 4. Probability sampling and non-probability sampling

Let’s Try! Identify the probability sampling used in each item. 1. The online seller writes all her loyal customers in a sheet of paper and draws 20 customers. 2 . The coordinator select 3 students in each grade level. 3 . A radio program staff member answer every 50 th caller. 4 . The teacher picks students in a stack of index cards on which their names are written. 5 . The Local Government Unit chooses respondents only from Barangays that are placed under hard lockdown. Random Random Cluster Systematic Stratified 4. Probability sampling and non-probability sampling

Let’s Try! Identify the non-probability sampling used in each item. 1. Asking 100 customers who are leaving the mall. 2 . Accepting blood donations from persons with AB-blood type and asking them if they can also refer friends whom they know with same blood type. 3 . Selecting COVID-19 survivors as respondents in a survey because the study deals with the development of a new corona virus vaccine. 4 . Posting an online survey and accepting only 300 responses. Convenience Quota Purposive Snowball 4. Probability sampling and non-probability sampling

5. Sampling error
