Group Discussion… is a critical conversation about a particular topic, or perhaps a range of topics, conducted in a group that allows participation by all members. have no specific purpose except the exchange of ideas and opinions. 

Group Discussion… emphasizes process (the consideration of ideas) over product . can be used to solve problems or give comments on something. may or may not have a leader to facilitate the discussion.

Prerequisites of a Group Discussion Knowledge Communication Skills

Elements of Group Discussion All members of the group have a chance to speak. The discussion is not dominated by any one person. Group members can give feedback on a certain idea or opinion. Arguments are based on the content of ideas and opinions, not on personalities.

Advantages of Group Discussion Learner-centred. It gives an opportunity to all members to give their ideas and opinion on a certain topic. It increases one’s listening skills and confidence in speaking . It helps students enhance their ability to articulate and defend a position thoughtfully and respectfully.

Advantages of Group Discussion It widens your knowledge about a topic. It stimulates thinking in a new way. It promotes positive peer support and feeling of belonging.

Disadvantages of Group Discussion Learning points can be confusing or lost. A few participants may dominate the discussion. Digression is inevitable. Consumes a lot of time for the transmission of information.

Disadvantages of Group Discussion The teacher may not be able to monitor all the groups. Challenging for the teacher when the group members do not interact easily.
