 Guided media transmission:
Guided media transmission means the data signals are guided along the path like
cabling system, they don’t have any other path except wires.

Types:
o Types of guided transmission media are given below.
 Twisted pair
 Coaxial
 Fiber optics

 Unguided media transmission:
Unguided media transmission means the transfer of data without any physical
means to define the path it takes. The data travel in the form of signals.

Types :
o Types of unguided transmission media are as given below.
 Radio waves
 Micro waves
 Infrared waves

Guided media transmission Unguided media transmission
Twisted pair:
Twisted pair consist of two insulated copper
wires arranged in a regular spiral pattern
Twisted pair are used for both analog and digital
transmission
The use of two wires twisted together helps to
reduce crosstalk and electromagnetic induction.

Radio waves:
Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic
radiation with wavelengths in the
electromagnetic radiations longer than
infrared light.
Radio waves have the frequencies as high
as 300 gigahertz to as low as 30 hertz.
Coaxial:
A coaxial cable is a type of shielded and
insulated copper cable which is used in
computer networks and to deliver the cable TV
services to end users.
Coaxial cable is also known as coax, which is
derived from the geometric axis, created
between a shield and insulator.
Micro waves:
Microwaves are the form of electromagnetic
radiation with wavelengths ranging from one
meter to one millimeter;
with frequencies lying between 300 MHz (1 m)
and 300 GHz (1 mm)
Fiber optic:
Optical fiber, also known as a fiber optic
cable, is an assembly similar to an electrical
data , but containing one or more optical
fiber that are used for carrying light.
The optical fiber elements are typically
individually coated with plastic layers and
contained in protective tube suitable for the
environment where the cable will be
deployed.
Infrared waves:
Infrared radiation is type of electromagnetic
radiation, as are radio waves,
ultraviolet radiation, X-rays and
microwaves.
Infrared (IR) light is the part of the EM
spectrum that people encounter most in
everyday life, although much of it goes
unnoticed. Its invisible.

The computer and other communicating devices represent data in the form
of signals. The signals transmit between communicating devices in the form
of electromagnetic energy, and hence the signals are
called electromagnetic signals.
Electromagnetic signals are the combination
of electric and magnetic fields that vibrates in relation to each other. The
electromagnetic signals can travel through various transmission media. The
transmission media is broadly classified into two categories that
are guided and unguided media.
The basic difference between guided and unguided media is that in
the guided media, the signal travels through a physical medium whereas,
in unguided media, the signal travel through the air.
There are some more
differences between guided and unguided media which I have discussed with
the help of comparison chart shown below.
