MYCOLOGY Habit and Habitat By Saajida Sultaana Mahusook
Fungi are eukaryotic, heterotrophic organisms. It includes yeast, molds, mushrooms, puffballs, mildews etc . Fungi are found in all habitats where organic matter is present. They occur in environmental condition which provides suitable food, moisture and temperature . Most of them are terrestrial and can also occur in fresh water or marine water. They are widely distributed in soil, water, dead and decaying organic matter, skin of animals etc.
Fungi found in association ( symbionts ) with the roots of vascular plants is called mycorrhizae . The association of fungi with photosynthetic partner (green algae or cyanobacteria) are called lichens . Fungi that grows on dead and decaying organic matter are called saprohytes . Some colonize on animals, plants and other fungi, living at their expense and cause diseases or even death and are called parasites .
Warm and humid conditions are necessary for the growth of fungi . Light is not required for the growth of fungi but some fungi needs light for spore formation and dispersal.
