HEALTH EDUCATION AGENCIES AND SOURCES PRESENTED BY –SHAILA PANCHAL

INTRODUCTION The need for a well-organized system of health education at the national and state level was felt by the Health Survey and development committee (Dr. Bhore Committee)in 1944.

NATIONAL LEVEL At the National Level-: Central health education bureau (CHEB) was set up by the Directorate of Health Services, Ministry of Health, in 1956 to strengthen health education and communication services.

AIM To promote and co-ordinate health education work and provide technical help and guidance to various organizations engaged in health education activities.

FUNCTIONS Training Search and Evaluation Field Study and Demonstration Centre (Urban & Rural) School Health Education Health Education Services and Media Administrative Division

CHEB FUNCTIONS Prepares and produces health education material. Provides technical help to various organizations engaged in health education activities. Provides technical help to schools for the health education of school children and teachers, training institution for training teachers in health education of children.

Conducts training program in education health for different categories of health personnel. Conducts, co-ordinates research on health education process, methods, media, health behaviors etc. Provides guidelines for the effective functioning of health education units at the state, district and local levels. Collaborates with international organizations on projects promoting health education activities.

STATE LEVEL State Health Education Bureaus were set up on the similar Pattern with the assistance of Central Government from 1959 onwards. S ome states have named them Information , Education and Communication (IEC) Bureau. State Health Education Bureaus have similar Function as those of CHEB.

DISTRICT LEVEL Health Education units were set up at the district level from 1971. CHEB provides guidelines for the organizational set up and functioning of state and district health education units.

To those bureaus and units, there are other official bureaus/ agencies which are part of Information and Broadcasting Ministry. These are as under: Doordarshan and All India Radio. Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP). Directorate of Field Publicity. Press Information Bureau. Song and Drama Division. Film Division.

Requirements and guidelines of IEC division. Mother and Child Health needs/ problems. Status of women. Population growth and family welfare. National health problems/ programmes .

There is also health education advocacy through NGOs like: Indian Association of Parliamentarian on Population and Development (IAPPD). Press Institute of I ndia (PII). Indian Red Cross (IRC), etc.

INTERNATIONAL LEVEL Health education and health promotion division of WHO: to provide support to the regional offices of WHO for strengthening their nation’s capabilities in Health Education and Promotion. It also develops new ideas and tools for health education.

Division of Public information and public relations of WHO: This division of WHO was earlier known as Division of Public Information and Education for health. This division also provides health information and supports health education work.

International union for health education : The international agency is mainly concerned with the promotion of national societies for health education. Its headquarter is in Paries . It has established the South- East Asia Regional Bureau (SEARB) in 1983. its headquarter is in Bangalore.
