LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this session, you should be able to: Define Health Management Information System /HMIS/ Describe basic principles of HMIS Explain why HMIS indicator revision is needed Compute different indicators coverage based on the case scenario 5/15/2024 2
Health Management Information System (HMIS) HMIS is the routine collection, aggregation, analysis, presentation and utilization of health and health related data for evidence based decisions for health workers , managers , policy makers and others . HMIS is one of the six building blocks essential for health system strengthening (WHO) 3 5/15/2024
Health Management Information System (HMIS)… Purposes of HMIS: Availing accurate, timely and complete data to support decision making at each level of the health system Strengthening the use of locally generated data for evidence based decision making 4 5/15/2024
Components of HMIS HMIS has two main components: Information management component and Use of the information for evidence-based decision-making. 5 5/15/2024
Components of HMIS Information management Data collection : Recording of health data using individual and family folder, registers, tally and reporting formats Data processing : is a process of cleaning, entering and aggregation of data. Data analysis and presentation : is a process of interpretation and comparison of generated information in the form of sentence, tables and graphs. 6 5/15/2024
Using information for management purposes Problem identification: identifying problems using key indicators Prioritizing problems and decision making : Problems identified should be prioritized and decide what types of actions need to be taken. Action taking: Implementing the agreed action. Result monitoring: Assessing the desired result has been achieved. Components of HMIS… 7 5/15/2024
The HMIS redesign and its development considered the following major principles, Standardization : Common definitions of indicators, data collection instruments, and data processing and analysis procedures form the foundation for effective HMIS/M&E. Without consistent principles and definitions performance cannot be systematically measured and improved across locations or over time. HMIS redesign major principles 8 5/15/2024
2. Simplification : Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting only the information that is immediately relevant to performance improvement makes best use of scarce resources, especially human resources. 3. Integration : A single HMIS/M&E plan, shared by all partners, is a cornerstone of health sector strategic plans. Implementation of this principle requires integrating data from different programs into a shared channel from which all derive their information. 9 5/15/2024
The current 177 HMIS indicators under 14 programmatic areas categorized Each of the indicators are presented with short names , codes , definitions, formula, interpretations with their limitations, disaggregation, source, reporting level and frequency.

Indicator calculation example Read the following Case scenario and answer the questions below: Y is a kebele with a total population of 25,000 at the year 2016 E.C. A Health center in this catchment provides the following family planning services New acceptors = 500 Repeat acceptors = 3500 Assuming proportion of Women in reproductive age group (15 -49 years) is 23%, Compute Contraceptive Acceptance Rate (CAR)
Class room Group exercise Read the following Case scenario and answer the questions 9-11 below: Ataklit is a kebele with a total population of 10,000 at the year 2016 E.C. A Health post in this kebele provides the following immunization service Penta1 = 330 children Penta3 = 300 children Measles = 280 children Fully immunized = 250 children Assuming proportion of surviving infants is 3.5%,
Compute Penta1 coverage of the kebele is Penta 3 coverage of the kebele is Fully immunized coverage of the kebele is Measles coverage of the kebele is
