Health Safety and Environment Presented by: Eng. Imaobong Joseph Akpan
What is HSE HSE (health, safety, and environment) management is a set of processes and procedures designed to identify and mitigate potential hazards in a particular environment, develop best practices for reducing or eliminating those hazards, and train employees in accident prevention and response. The primary goal of HSE management is to create a culture of safety by continuously assessing risks, implementing controls, and improving HSE performance to prevent harm to people and the environment. A safe and healthy workplace not only protects workers from injury and illness, it can also lower injury/illness costs, reduce absenteeism and turnover, increase productivity and quality, and raise employee morale. 2
Define HSE Elaborately Health : is the total good physical, emotional and mental state of an individual and not a mere absence of diseases, which the individual, the business and the nation need for sustainable development. Safety/Welfare : is a state in which one is free from danger or situations that can cause harm or injury to persons, or damage to equipment. Environmental : is the air, land and water in which people, animals and plants live, and includes in our context, the workplace with the machinery, equipment, materials, facilities and activities, all of which must be maintained in a healthful and safe state. 3
Five fundamentals of HSE What hazards might be faced while performing this task? Are controls and barriers in place to avoid incidents? Are personnel competent for the tasks? Are the processes and procedures available, and Adequately performing the work safely. 4

Workplace Hazard A hazard is something that can cause harm if not controlled. The outcome is the harm that results from an uncontrolled hazard. A risk is a combination of the probability that a particular outcome will result and the severity of the harm involved. Accident: is an event that has unintentionally happened, that results in damage, injury or harm . An incident is an event that has unintentionally happened, but this may not result in damage, harm or injury. Therefore, every accident can be an incident. However, not all incidents can be termed as an accident. Unsafe Conditions can be defined as workplace environment risks to workers that may or may not have been identified, such as biological, chemical, electrical, environmental, mechanical, and physical conditions. Unsafe Acts can be defined as an employee ignoring the prescribed safety standards or company policies. 11 Hazard, Risk and Outcome
Five General Hazards Areas All workplace hazards exist in five general areas: Materials Equipment Environment People System 12
Hazard Identification and Control 13 Mitigating and eliminating hazards on the worksite is a priority for all health and safety professionals, as it is their duty to create a safe working environment for team members. This includes implementing a proper process for hazard assessments and identification.

Types of workplace hazards 18 Safety Hazards: Safety hazards are any risks associated with the workplace including those associated with equipment and tools on the worksite, in addition to potential hazards that could result in slips, trips, and falls. Physical Hazards: Physical hazards are those that have the potential to harm someone physically causing injury, illness, or death. These range from temperature and noise to indoor air quality and radiation. Chemical Hazards: These hazards come from chemicals which could be potentially dangerous to humans and result in illness, injury, or death. Ergonomic Hazards: Ergonomic hazards are related to injuries resulting from the actions involved in a person’s role. This includes everything from lifting heavy equipment to typing on a computer.
5 Steps to Identify and Assess Workplace Hazard 19
Controlling Hazards 20 To combat hazardous conditions and unsafe work practices, control strategies called “Hierarchy of Controls” has been developed. Elimination Substitution Engineering Controls Administrative Controls Personal Protective Equipment

Housekeeping 23 What do we mean by poor housekeeping? One of the most common findings in workplaces is poor housekeeping i.e. untidiness, disorder, poor storage of materials and stock . On many workplace inspection visits one can usually see dirt and dust on the workbenches, light fittings and floors etc.

Reasons Why Safety Is Important? Safety is to be free from danger, risk, and injury. Accidents can happen at work , but these accidents can be prevented or minimized if we all adopt and practice safety measures and precautions. It is important to think about safety when it comes to employment. Conclusion: Everyone should be making their best effort to become a success in his/her job and life. If someone cares for his family and friends, then he needs to practice safety in all he does, including at work. That’s because ethical values are at the heart of good safety performance. Protecting our environment from harm is important too because it is the right thing to do. When we think about safety, the first thing that comes to mind is protection from accidents and injury. But, safety also includes protecting our environment from harm. That’s why everyone needs to practice safety in their home, workplaces. And, when we all work together as a team, we are more likely to be as safe as possible, thereby making safety seen. 27
