Healthy Relationships Women of Opportunities Champaign Housing Authority

Signs of an Unhealthy Relationship One or Both of You Try to control or manipulate the other Make the other feel bad about her/himself Ridicule or call each other names Dictate how the other dresses Discourage the other from being close with anyone else Put down or unsupportive of others based on race, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or other personal attributes Ignore each other when one is speaking

Components of a Healthy Relationship Mutual respect Trust Honesty Support Fairness/Equality Separate Identities Good Communication

Mutual Respect Make sure that your partner, or person you are in a relationship with, understand who you are and accept your significant personality and traits make sure that your partner respects your boundaries and won’t try to make you do something you are uncomfortable with or make you feel uncomfortable your partner would listen to what you have to say and respectively tell you how he/she feels about your point of view

Trust Jealousy is a natural emotion, BUT there is still an appropriate way to act when a person is feeling jealous In your relationship both partners need to be able to control feelings of jealousy Each partner should understand that the other partner has a life of their own and can speak with or go anywhere that they please Each partner should be able to trust that their partner will not do something to hurt the relationship, for examples cheat, when they are not around the other partner

Honesty Honesty and trust go hand and hand A relationship is a two way street so you need to be honest to your partner to expect them to be honest to you If you decide to lie to your partner, then the next time you tell the truth they may be hesitant to believe you It is important to be honest, if you say something your partner doesn't agree with there are other ways within a healthy relationship to be able to work them out

Support It is important that you offer your partner support during good and bad times It is also important that your partner supports you during your good and bad times as well When you're in a relationship with a partner, or family member, they should be able to help you out through rough times and also be able to celebrate with you during good times

Fairness/Equality Within any type of relationship it is important to treat one another with the same equal treatment Acknowledge and compliment a person or yourself for the the work you have done and the contributions you have made (Give credit when due) One person must not dominate or hold power over the other Equity is measured by comparing the ratios of contributions and benefits of each person (does not have to be equal, but must be similar) Fairness/Equality has not been established if a person or you feels underappreciated or even worthless

Separate Identities Everyone needs to make compromises for relationships at one point, but that doesn’t mean that you should feel like you’re losing out on being yourself! Remember to be yourself - you are your own individual with different families, friends, interests, hobbies, etc. and that doesn’t need to change No one should have to pretend to like something they’re not, or give up seeing their friends, or drop out of activities they love You should always feel free to keep developing new talents or interests, making new friends, and moving forward

Good Communication Interpersonal communication skills The phrase "no, nothing's wrong" usually means that something is wrong Ask questions and speak honestly/openly Never keep a feeling bottled up because you're afraid it’s not what the other person wants to hear or because you worry that it sounds silly… nothing is silly! If you need some time to think something through before you're ready to talk about it, that is completely fine too
