Hector In The Odyssey
This extract from Book 6 of Homer's The Iliad comes at a point where the Trojans are heavily losing
to the Achaeans. Hélenus, son of Priam has instructed Hector to return to the city to gather the elders
to tell them to offer prayers to the gods so that goddess Athena may pity Troy. It is interesting that
Homer should choose Hector to deliver this message rather than an unimportant character; Homer
uses it as a devise to develop Hector and make him a more (if not the most) sympathetic character.
He shows his contrasting sides; his family oriented side as opposed to the cruel warrior. The
interaction with his child, Astyanax, brings a moment of tenderness and humanises Hector.Hector's
contrasting aspects to his character can be explored through

How Is Hector Alike
While reading The Iliad, the righteousness "courage" is a continuous theme, which appeared
throughout this epic. In the course of the Trojan War, heroism seemed highly valued than life alone,
therefore a man's bravery was viewed as more prominent verses whether or not he was truthful or
devoted to his significant other. Instead of primarily focusing on the concern of courageousness,
more specifically I wanted to thoroughly examine two very different characters to see how they
contrast one another. Both Achilles, King of Myrmidons, and Hector, Prince of Troy, struck me as
the most strongly divergent characters. Arguably, I perceived Hector as more daring than Achilles,
not only am I arguing that Hector showed more heroism but overall he is a ... Show more content on

After a short time, we start to notice adjustments of Achilles, perhaps for making progress. This may
be a sign of Achilles contending with his senile ego, definitively bettering himself or it is possible
that this signifies that Achilles is prepared to "put on a modern ensemble of shield" and set apart
from his old doings. In fact Hector may also embody Achilles' adjusted self–importance whom
Achilles is demanding to endure, after all this conjecture regarding death, etc., for all one knows the
single entity Achilles truly dreads are his emotions. Hector was the one of the only characters whose
death actually had an impact on me because without him the destruction of Troy is clinched. Across
the whole book we are able to see instances of his courage. Not until the very end does Achilles
demonstrate these traits and even then he still gives the impression of revolt with how he has
transformed into "easygoing." Since the introduction suggests that the name Hector means "holder,"
therefore the fate of Troy's welfare was Hector, and that is why he earns the right to be the real man
of courage in the

How Is Hector Justified In Killing Achilles
Have you ever wanted to take a look into the life of the gods and goddesses? Meet Achilles,
demigod, son of a mortal king and a goddess. The king of Myrmidons, and the mightiest of the
Greek warriors. Achilles and Hector have been at war with each other for years. Hector, terrible
Hector, murdered Achilles closest friend. This couldn't be brushed off, revenge must be had.
Achilles sought to avenge the wrongful death of his dear friend. Hector didn't know what he was in
for, until it was too late.
The limp body of Hector lay on the ground, finally dead. Starting with Achilles, the Greek troops
vigorously stabbed Hector's lifeless body. Disrespecting it with each thrust of their gleaming
weapons. Achilles had a profusion of contempt for Hector, the lunge into Hector's body was just the
beginning of releasing his rage. However justified this act was, it was rather dishonorable to have
been done by someone with as much honor, in the eyes of his people, as Achilles. ... Show more

Achilles, the honorable Achilles, then stabs Hector's spiritless body. In doing this he is dishonoring
Hector and ignoring Trojan burial rights. Achilles brings dishonor upon himself by doing so. Burial
rights are very important to the Trojans and the Greeks. They believed that if a body went unburied
the person's soul never found peace. They relied heavily on women when it came to burial, the
closest women relatives would wash and wrap the body in the traditional burial shroud. Denying a
soul peace by refusing proper burial was very dishonorable. Achilles may be a demigod, however
that does not exempt him from allowing Hector's family to follow the unspoken

Hector At The Feet Of Patroclus Essay
The famous scene in Homer's Iliad when Achilles presents the mangled dead body of the Trojan
Hector to his lover/cousin Patroclus is one of intense emotion: revenge, despair, and an angrily
passionate loss of love. The French artist Jean–Joseph Taillasson presents the scene in the form of a
painting (Achilles Displaying the Body of Hector at the Feet of Patroclus, 1769) in an interesting
way. At this point in the historical timeline of art Rococo was giving way to a new Classical style.
Caught between these two styles this painting manages to aptly and amply achieve both.
Beginning a formal analysis by exploring the composition of the work, in this particular case, is to
begin with how a viewer would experience the painting. The forms closest ... Show more content on

The braided hair and ribbons of one of the grieving woman's hair, small sprigs of foliage adorning
the platform of Patroclus' bed, the Greek ships silhouetted in the background, and the inclusion of
Achilles' armor all contribute to the Classical theme. It is as if Taillasson is trying to convince the
viewer, through these scattered Classical elements, that this is indeed a true Classical painting.
Perhaps he thought it was. However, time begs to differ. In the grand scheme of art history it is not a
pure of perfect example of a Classical work or a Rococo. The composition and theme of the painting
– an apparent use of horizontals and verticals on angular planes and a theme relating to myths of
antiquity – are markers of the Classical. The colors, brushstroke, and poses/treatment of the body –
soft pastels, loose and fluffy strokes, and relaxed figures – are that of Rococo. Overall, the painting
is an example of the space of time between both art periods. Those trained in Rococo, like Taillasson
was, were trying to maintain the techniques they were taught. In this work Taillasson is conforming
with the newly popular Classical style, but only in intention not result. The subsequent work created
still clings to all things

Achilles Vs Hector In The Iliad
Achilles vs Hector In the "Iliad", both Hector (Trojan warrior) and Achilles (Greek warrior) display
heroic characteristics. Both have strengths and weaknesses, which are apparent throughout the
conflicts in the epic poem. They have obvious differences and limited similarities, which logically
lends itself to the idea of who is more admirable. On one hand there is Achilles, a great warrior, son
of Thetis and King Peleus, and notorious for his anger. This is shown when Achilles addresses King
Agamemnon, "You drunkard, with eyes like a bitch and heart like a fawn! You never arm yourself
with your men for battle..." (Homer 8). Achilles is beyond livid about king Agamemnon's
threatening to take Briseis (Achilles woman), and shows this through ... Show more content on

This is shown when he tries to make a truce with Achilles, "If Zeus gives me endurance, and with it
I take your life. I will do no vile outrage to your body; I will take your amour, Achilles, and your
body I will give back to your people. You do the same" (Homer 318). Hector is thinking of the
people on both sides of the war. For Hector, war is a necessary evil; he longs for peace, yet realizes
that it is not likely to return to Troy. His involvement in the Trojan War is motivated by his duty to
protect the people of the country and the city in with they reside. Hector is what some consider a
"true patriot". He shows his deep seated love through his refusal to take wine from his mother. His
reason is simple; wine would cripple him and make him forget that he must fight for his country. In
contrast to the anger of Achilles, Hector is calm and quiet. As the first day of battle draws to an end,
Hector returns to the city to be bombarded with questions about husbands and fathers, which he
answers calmly, before joining his parents, children and wife in the palace. Between Achilles and
Hector, the most admirable person would be Hector. He is a calm, caring and selfless person. Hector
is no invincible by any means, as his battle with Achilles shows. He longs for peace and fears the
towering rage of Achilles. He concentrates on what is beneficial for the community as a whole,
opposed to Achilles, whose lust for vengeance and treasure trumps his loyalty for his

Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique
My favorite piece is Symphonie Fantastique by the composer Hector Berlioz. This is my favorite
piece because I love how it really tells a story through music. You can feel the emotions he puts into
every single sound. Frankly, I enjoy this the most, because it is the only orchestra song I have
listened to that I could see the picture running through my head. Therefore throughout this essay I
will show you an in depth look into the piece Symphonie Fantastique and illustrate why it is my
favorite. Hector was born in 1803 in La Cotes St Andre, a small town near the French alps. Hector
began using instruments at the age of twelve, however he was a very isolated and lonely teen. He
went to school to first become a doctor, but then he realized that was not his passion and switched to
music. Furthermore Hector Berlioz became known as the father of modern orchestration. During the
writing of Symphonie Fantastique he was inspired very inspired by Beethoven's work and began
writing symphonies because of him. This piece was originally written when Berlioz saw an actress
in a Shakespeare play and fell in love with her. He became obsessive and wrote this to get her
attention and hopefully steal her heart. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"The symphony describes his obsession and dreams, tantrums and moments of tenderness, and
visions of suicide and murder, ecstasy and despair." The symphony does have a program because
there's five different movements, and they all tie into his journey to pursue the woman from the
shakespeare play. Symphonie Fantastique does not have lyrics, however they are not necessary
because the story is told through the emotions and the music in the piece. It is a romantic symphony
because the form is first movement as sonata allegro form, second movement as thematic
development, third movement as minuet trio, and fourth movement as sonata

How Are Hector And Achilles Alike
Achilles and Hector are similar in a few ways but are different in many more. Both men are
renowned warriors and some of the best fighters for their sides. And unfortunately, both men are
fated to die. Both men are human, although only barely in Achilles's case, who can only be wounded
if hit in a small spot on his heel. But despite these few similarities, Achilles and Hector are more
different than they are alike. Achilles let's himself be ruled by his emotions while Hector has a more
steady and calm temperament. Hector has a wife and a son and is capable of showing love towards
others, Achilles on the other hand only speaks to his mother when he needs something: revenge, or
armor. One drastic difference between the two men is an unfortunate character flaw that Achilles
portrays constantly: anger. In fact the first sentence of the Iliad clearly states that it is the story of
Achilles's anger. "Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus' son Achilles and it's devastation." (I, 1–2)
Throughout the story you continuously see the products of his rage. He refuses to fight for
Agamemnon because of the stealing of Breisis, and instead invokes the power of Zeus so that the
Greeks will lose against the Trojans until his (Achilles's) honor has been restored."If perhaps he
(Zeus) might be willing to help the Trojans, and pin the Achaians against the ships and the water,
dying, so that thus they may all have profit of their own king, that Atreus son wide ruling
Agamemnon may recognize

Why Was Hector Responsible For The Trojan War
Hector, one of the greatest worries in the Trojan army, but would always be known from his death.
He had all the wonderful ideas of how he would leave this world but of them came to pass. His
mother tried to get he to understand that he could not defeat Achilles alone, she wanted him to get
behind the wall for protection. Hector had his own agenda he was not running it was time to fight to
the death. Now the moment he had been waiting for has arrived but he was not ready. Hector though
he had it all planed out but when he saw Achilles he ran and ran around the city wall. Hector got
tired of running and waiting on Achilles to get close because he though of a proposition.
The propose was to die with dignity, these terns were came from

The Hero Of Achilleus And Hector In Homer's Iliad
Heroes are one of the most important subjects of Greek mythology, hero was considered someone
that is more that an ordinary man but less than a god, so in effect it has it's own place between
humans and gods. Heroes like Achilleus and Hector in Homers Iliad fought on opposite sides of
Trojan War. Hector as well as Achilleus possesses the essential qualities of a hero according to a
heroic code, they both had a support from gods, honoured by other men and were leaders of their
people just to name a few.
Having a support from gods almost guaranteed your status as a hero, there are a lot of examples
found throughout the Homeric poem: 'in their hearts they loved him' (24.423) referring to Hektor as
well as 'Achilleus beloved of Zeus' (1.74). Olympians doing favours and contributing to the material
wealth of the heroes as seen in 'yes, for they are immortal horses, and Poseidon gave them' (23.277)
and 'Since Zeus had given him great wealth' (23.298–299) can be seen throughout Iliad. Their
involvement in heroes actions went as far as controlling their thoughts and not only actions 'a thing
put into his mind by the goddess of the white arms, Hera' (1.55) and their actions 'Since the gods
have granted me the killing of this man' (22.379). In this last example hero is not even seen
accountable of his killings. Greek Gods were powerful and could easily overturn ones luck so it was
essential to worship them with sacrifices. To disobey a god meant losing their support and could

Why Hector And Achilles Are Homeric Heroes
It is known that both Hector and Achilles are both Homeric Heroes in their own right. Both men are
fighting for various paralleled reasons. However, both men have very different motivations fueling
them and these motivations cause them to make rash decisions in extenuating conditions. Each man
is motivated simultaneously by family, honor, and pride.
Achilles and Hector both clearly value family. For Achilles his family is the men who fight beside
him. When one of them is killed in battle he makes the passionate verdict to retaliate with
vengeance. His need to destroy his enemies is what eventually seals his fate. To say the least family
is of high priority to Achilles. Hector on the other hand, is not overly concerned with family in the
heat of the war. Yes, he does express concern for their well–being should anything happen to him,
nevertheless he gives no sympathy to those who love him. For Hector there are more important
matters to attend to outside the walls of Troy and that is all that matters him. The war is Hector's
first priority. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These men fight for honor, not just privately but publicly as well. This meaning that they are looking
for some inward sense of honor and outward honor from the men they are in arms with. In Greek
terms, both men are looking for their kleos or immortal recognition. Achilles knows of his
predestination which he comes to terms with after the death of Patroclus, and his destruction of
Hector. Achilles identifies with his kleos and pursues it wholeheartedly. Hector desires some form of
kleos, but he truly never claims it. This yearning to have this spiritual immortality is what fuels him
to continue his rampage on the Greeks. Even though this motive is short–lived it lead to very
hotheaded decisions meant to earn him honor and glory on the battle

Achilles Vs. Hector : Achilles And Hector
Essay #2 Homer's The Iliad describes majority of the war that went on between the Greek and
Trojan, which included the warriors Achilles and Hector. Throughout the poem the similarities and
the differences became evident between the main characters, Achilles and Hector. Although Achilles
and Hector are considered two different types of heroes, they had their similarities as much as they
had their differences. Both Achilles and Hector were the greatest warriors of their armies, and both
are very stubborn when it comes to their honor. The differences between the two of them is that
Hector is a family man, while Achilles never married nor had children, and the two are fighting for
purely two different reasons, Achilles is fighting for his blood thirst and glory, while Hector fights to
defend his people and family. Achilles starts fighting for revenge, while Hector fights to defend
Trojan. After Patroclus was killed by Hector, Antilochus told Achilles. "A black cloud of sorrow
came upon Achilles as he heard", and tells his mother that Hector must die from his spear, he "must
pay for Patroclus' death"(149–151). Achilles loses all his humanity and has no mercy after his friend
had been killed; however Hector holds on to his humanity while fighting. Achilles began killing
Trojans mercilessly until he got what he wanted, because the vengeance for his friend mattered more
than his humanity. Achilles also did not feel remorse when he slaughtered Hector in front of his

The Character Of Hector As A Tragic Hero
Hector is the heir to the house of Priam. As the prince of Troy he expresses extraordinary passion for
his nation through his position as the irrefutable commander. Hector is a tragic hero in this epic
poem. This is primarily portrayed through his tremendous sense of responsibility relevant to his
station in Trojan society. Hector has the willingness to fight and stand by Troy while having a
healthy family. "You, Hector you are my father now, my noble mother, and brother too and you are
my husband, young and warm, and strong!"
The men of Troy respect Hector. Seeing him fight pushes them to battle on in his honor. Hector is a
heroic character who fights with respect and passion. Not only does he represent a hero in the poem
but could also act as one in our society.
"All this weighs on my mind too, dear women. But I would die of shame to fail the men of Troy and
the Trojan women trailing their long robes if I would shrink from battle now, a coward. Nor does the
spirit urge me on that way I've learned it too well. To stand up bravely, always to fight in the front
ranks of the trojan soldiers, winning my father great glory, glory for myself." (p210)
This quote proves that Hector will do anything in his will to be an honorable man and brave hero to
the Trojan men and women, all the while knowing that his fate will end in death by Achilles. They
carried gallant Hector forth, weeping tears, and they placed his corpse aloft the pyre's crest, flung a
torch and set it all aflame."

Essay on The Heroes of the Trojan War: Hector & Achilles
In the Greek epic, The Iliad, Homer describes the siege and capture of the ancient city of Troy by
Achilles and the Achaean warriors. Achilles, being a fearless fighter, defeated many throughout his
battles against the Trojan army, including the brave–hearted Hector during the invasion of Troy.
Though Achilles has been given the title of the hero of the Trojan War, many historians believe that
Hector was a greater hero than Achilles. When comparing the characteristics of an epic hero such as
being a national hero and having supernatural abilities, Hector clearly surpasses Achilles. In this
essay, the argument will be supported through the context of the heroic personas revealed by the
warriors and the non–heroic qualities that dishonored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Meanwhile, Hector was often pictured as a strong, valiant man who also had a gentler side, unlike
Achilles. Even when facing attacking armies, Hector fought to protect his family from the invading
forces and for the survival of his city. It should be noted that before Hector faced the tragedies of the
upcoming Trojan War, he blessed his only son and asked Zeus, the god of all gods, to grant his son
to be like him, the "first in glory among the Trojans" (340). Though Hector was a better man in a
moral sense when compared to Achilles, he still had some flaws. While attempting to eliminate
Achilles, Hector mistakenly killed one of Achilles' closest men, Patroclus, who happened to be
wearing Achilles' armor. After Patroclus' death, Hector, under the belief that he had defeated the
great Achilles, removed the armor from the corpse and wore it, which defiled the warrior's respect
and honor. Also, in "Book 22" of the Iliad, Hector tainted his honor during the arrival of Achilles by
leaving "the gates [of Troy] behind and [fleeing] in fear" (347). Even though he fled Achilles,
Hector knew that in order to save his people, he must face the great runner, and he did so for Troy.
Unfortunately for Hector, he was facing certain death. When Hector took his final stand, Achilles,
with Athena's assistance, dealt the final blow that killed the great Hector. Due to the infinite outrage
of the death of Patroclus' death still dwelling inside of him, Achilles refused to return

Achilles and Hector, although they are arch enemies and rival leaders, are very similar in their
actions, beliefs and character traits. Now no one can argue that they are the same, but in the three
enumerations in which I will base my argument on, they are quite similar. Looking closely at the
actions of both Achilles and Hector, you realize that even though they fought on opposite side, they
are still quite similar in their actions. First off, Achilles kills whomever he wants, you see this in
almost all of book 19, when he puts on his armor and goes throughout the Trojans, killing at will.
That goes much the same with Hector as he slaughters the Achaean ranks near the ships in books 12
and 13 as he breaks the Achaeans wall and leads his men to their foes ships. ... Show more content

Such was his intention when he was stopped and brought to his senses. So as you can see, Achilles
and Hector, though not the same are similar in their actions. In their beliefs, these two slaves of war
have similar ideals as well. To start, Achilles believes in the Greek gods and tales of old. Hector
believes in the gods as well. It is plain throughout the whole book that their beliefs and passions for
the gods were real and true. Many times they pray to Apollo, or Zeus or Athena for help or comfort
in time of trouble. So it is plain to see that both men are Polytheists and believe in the gods and
myths of ancient Greece. But beyond religion, they are still similar, many people give praise and
credit to Hector, holding him in high esteem, however I hold neither in esteem for both were men of
cockiness and cowardice. Yes, I said cowardice, even though both men were brave fighters and
thought of as hero's in battle, they both showed sign of childish fear at one point or another.
Achilles, on page 283–284 lets his squire go into battle and stays behind, his excuse; he has no
armor because he gave his to Patroclus. In my eyes that is a cowardice excuse. Hector on the other
hand is a coward in much the

Hector Vs Achilles
In Homer's The Iliad, Hector and Achilles are both amazing heroes who receive a great amount of
respect from their people. Achilles is in charge of the Greek army, while Hector leads the Trojan
army. Both are strong and fearless soldiers who are almost god–like, but with plenty of human
flaws. They both have failures that eventually lead to tragedy. Moreover, both are ruled by fate
through the mercy of the gods (Book 22; 331). These two great warriors share many outstanding
differences that ultimately shape my opinion on each character, such as their view on the importance
of family and the amount of honor they each obtain.
One essential difference between Hector and Achilles is their personal value of family. Hector seems

As with most Greek epics, both men also exhibit human flaws. Hector, despite being the strongest of
warrior of Troy, could sometimes be impetuous at times and sometimes cowardly at others. Hector's
pride was also a flaw which one that eventually led to his death. Achilles was a stubborn person
from the beginning of the story. Anger and thirst for revenge carried Achilles through to the end of
the epic, as evidenced by his mutilation of Hector's body.Achilles refusal to return to the safety of

Achilles later comes around to an appreciation of these very values after realizing the faults of his
brutality and self–centered rage.
The final duel between Achilles and Hector becomes not only a duel of heroes but also for pride of
their country. In strength and endurance, Achilles proves to be superior to Hector. Achilles
mistreated Hector's body with disgrace which compounded by cruelty in which he allows the rank
and file of his army to indulge. Achilles fights the battle in engaged rage while Hector display
control and fixes whatever flaw he had.
Achilles and Hector were different in many ways. Achilles fought for Greece and Hector fought to
protect Troy. They were different in that Hector was a prince and Achilles was not. Hector was
raised in order to rule over Troy, to be the king of the land. Achilles was raised in order to become a
strong warrior. Although Achilles was raised to become a strong soldier, he was offered royalty as
king of Greece. Unfortunately he declined the offer because he did not want that much fame, he
would rather be in command on the battlefield than on the throne. Hector was purely mortal and son
of royalty. Achilles had divinity in him because his mother was Thetis, a nymph which was a

Hector, Honor And Honor In Homer's Odyssey '
A strong example of how Hector is loyal is how he treats his men and family. Hector exchanged
gold armor for bronze to equal himself to his men. He also struggled with whether to stay home with
his family instead of going to war. He loved his family but he wanted to fight with his men as well.
Because of his loyalty he earned the respect of his men. As the story tells on page 207, Hector was
injured by a spear and he fell in battle. While some soldiers grabbed Hector others stood between
Hector and the enemies to protect him from harm. The soldiers dragging Hector brought him to the
river wake him and help him recover from his injuries. Most men will not risk themselves to protect
their leader if they aren't treated with respect and loyalty. Another example Hector's loyalty, is how
he protects his brother Paris even though the main cause of the war Paris' keeping helen and not

Hector: Strongest Soldier In The Trojan Army
Character Analysis
Hector
Hector was said to be the strongest soldier in the Trojan army. He was the son of Priam and the
commander of the Trojan army. He caused great strife for the Achaean troops for most of the story
while Achilles was nursing his wounded pride. While he was less arrogant than Agamemnon and
Achilles, he could be far more rash and often was far more cruel than necessary. He was also more
ignorant of his fate for most of the epic. Achilles knew of his fate and his death, while Hector could
not fathom the thought of the Trojans losing the war. Hector was shown as being more of a family
man than the other characters and whenever he fought, he was always fighting to protect his
homeland and his family, unlike the Achaeans. It is my opinion that Hector was the antagonist of
this story, because of the way that Homer wrote about the wins and losses from both sides of the
army. Whenever Hector gained the upper hand or killed an Achaean commander, it was always
described as a tragedy or a loss. Whenever the Trojans lost the upper hand and began to fall back,
the wording was more uplifting and it was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was the son of Peleus and the goddess Thetis. He often let his pride and arrogance get the better
of him and this caused him great personal loss. His rage, though, was its own force of nature; it was
his rage that lead him to send Zeus against the Achaeans and to refuse to help them later on. It was
also his rage that lead to the slaughter of droves of Trojans, including Hector himself. Part of what
drove Achilles on with such a force was his yearning for glory and recognition. He would have liked
to live a peaceful life, but knew that in order to receive such glory he had to live out his fate as a
warrior. His raw brutality was unrelenting throughout the story, until Priam begged at Achilles' feet
for his son's body, which reminded Achilles of his father, causing him to feel pity for the old

How Was Hector A Civilized
The definition of civilized basically means people or places that are either well educated, behaved,
or pleasantly in order set by social standards of that culture. For example, Im pretty sure everyone
has heard of the phrase, "Now lets all act like civilized people," whenever something or someone is
getting out of order. I would consider Hector to be a civlized man because of the way he treated his
family with respect and decency. I say this because after being offered to chit–chat with a very
beautiful woman named Helen, Hector goes to say, " I'm going to my house now to see my family,
my wife, and my boy, I don't know if I'll ever be back to see them again." (page 211) During this
present time, there are a lot of men that go out and disrespect

Similarities Between Hector And Achilles
"The Iliad" epic of Homer occurs in the 9th year of a decade battle between the Achaeans and
Trojans. This greater fight puts Achilles (of Achaeans) as well as Hector (of the Trojans) in direct
war since they are the best fighters in their particular society and thus accountable for leadership and
inspiration of their people. In the epic, Agamemnon the son of Atreus is the Greek Commander.
Hector who displays the bravery of Trojan soldiers is a prince. Even though there were many
protagonist within the epic, Achilles and Hector are the most crucial chaarcters. Bold and relentless
and their better skill in war makes them heroes before their peers. Being heroes, both Achilles
together with Hector share traits generally connected with any person of eminent valor like worth,
honor as well as bravery. Similarly, their efforts to surpass their bounds, both of them are governed
by fate through the compassion of the gods. Regardless of similarities as greater fighter heroes, the
pair vary massively in personal inspiration. According to the writer Achilles and Hector are most
valuable characters in the Iliad as they are revered and also respected as heroes by everyone of their
public. Conversely, they differ by the manner that they had relations with their families, the
technique that they used to lead their troops, how they interact with and view the supremacy of the
gods. This exegetical essay will explore and discusses the similarities between Hector and Achilles
of The Iliad.

How Is Hector A Tragic Hero
In the film Troy, several main characters are tragic, yet the tragic occurrences surrounding that of
Hector, Helen, and Achilles are of greater prominence. Hector establishes himself as the most tragic
character when his blade takes the life of Achilles's beloved cousin Patroclus. The tragedy of this act
climaxes when Hector removes Achilles's helmet from Patroclus's head, and realizes his fatal flaw in
judgment. Upon slaying Achilles's cousin and comrade, Hector comes to the grim conclusion that
his death will come at the hands of Achilles. The tragedy surrounding Hector does not stem
exclusively from Patroclus's death, but rather the catharsis that surrounds Hector's struggle in
juggling his devotion to his wife, brother, father, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hector is also of royal blood, which gives him authority over his people and signifies his status as a
nobleman. Therefore, Hector is a leader on the basis of his royal status, combat skills, and virtuous
standing among the people. Hector is undeniably a rival to Greece and Achilles, but he is not the
film's primary villain. Hector is confident in his fighting abilities as well as the defensive
capabilities of Troy's walls on the eve of the conflict with the Greeks. Hector's conflict with the
Myrmidons and Achilles during the first conflict on the Trojan beach alarms Hector and gives him
doubts regarding the Trojans' fighting strength. Ironically, Patroclus's death could have been avoided
if Achilles and his men had taken Hector's life in the Temple of Apollo. Hector continually doubts
the gods and their willingness to assist the Trojans in their battle. This is evident during a session
between King Priam and his court of advisors. Yet, Hector does not become hubristic like Achilles.
Hector's defense of Paris during the conflict with Menelaus solidifies his place as a noble hero, by
risking his life to save his own brother. Following the fight with Menelaus, Hector continually
demonstrates his heroic fighting and leadership skills in the battle that ensues shortly after. After the
battle's conclusion Hector thinks it wise to use the city's massive walls to repel the Greeks with their
superior archers. However, King Priam decides to go on the aggressive and take the battle to the
Greek's beach encampment. Consequently, this decision by Hector's father leads to Hector's tragic
flaw and mistake in judgment. In the heat of the ensuing battle Hector engages in combat with
Patroclus, who is disguised as Achilles. Patroclus's inferior fighting skills are no match for Hector's.
Consequently, Patroclus is slain by Hector, and Hector realizes that a deciding

Achilles And Hectors Relationship In The Iliad
Achilles and Hectors Relationship The Iliad was an epic poem written in the 8th century BCE by the
Greek poet Homer. The Iliad is considered to be the earliest work in Western literature, and is one of
the most well–known and respected stories ever written. The Iliad covers the events of the last
couple weeks of the ten years that the Trojan War took place. The Iliad is an epic that has many
underline themes such as love, war, hate and forgiveness. The poem greatly covers Achilles roll in
the Trojan War and how the gods and goddess were constantly intervening with the outcome of the
war. The Iliad also vastly covers Achilles and Hectors relationship thought the last weeks of the
Trojan War. Achilles and Hectors relationship was one filled with hate and resentment for each
other. Much of their hate stems from book 15 and 16 of the Iliad. In this part of the epic poem
Achilles is upset because he was disrespected, and decides that he will not fight in the war to show
them how much they need him. Patroclus went to visit Achilles in his tent to beg him to let him wear
his armor into battle. Achilles was still not wanting to join the fight, so he let Patroclus use his
armor. Achilles allows this with the understanding Patroclus will only be there long enough to save
the ships, and then return. As Patroclus is getting dressed one of the ships is set on fire. Achilles
sends soldiers to help and then asks Zeus to let Patroclus and the ships return unharmed. When the

Paris And Helen And The Relationship Between Hector And...
A Comparison of the Relationship between Paris and Helen and the Relationship between Hector
and Andromache
The relationship between Paris and Helen differs greatly from the relationship between Hector and
Andromache. These differences are most evident in books three and six. A major difference between
the two relationships is whether or not an outside force is pushing the relationship. In book three
lines 486 to 489, Aphrodite forces Helen to go back to the bedroom with Paris. Initially, Helen does
not want to go stating that it would be "disgraceful to share that coward's bed once more" (, 476).
Helen very clearly does not want to go back and be with Paris, but cannot go against Aphrodite's
wishes which is shown as "she [goes] along, in silence" (, 488). Hector, on the other hand, makes the
choice to go back and see his wife in book six. Unlike Helen going along is silence, Andromache
"came running up to meet him" (V, 466). Andromache's eagerness, as shown by her running,
supports the idea that her relationship with Hector is not forced. This is a huge difference from
Helen's reluctance of being with Paris due to it being forced by Aphrodite. There is also a huge
difference between the relationships in whether or not one wishes their partner were dead. In book
three, when Helen sees Paris back to the war she is disgusted to see him back and not fighting as
shown by her saying, "Oh would to god you'd died there, brought down by that great soldier, my
husband long ago" (, 500–501). Not only does she say she wishes he would've died she also brings
up that her previous husband, Menelaus, would have killed him. Later, in line 510, she reiterates a
similar statement saying that Menelaus would impale Paris with his spear. Helen's wishes of
Menelaus killing Paris is a sharp contrast to how Andromache reacts after Hector returns home.
Andromache begs Hector to stay with her and pleads in book 6 line 511 to think about how her son
will be an orphan and she will be a widow if he dies. Even the thought of Hector dying and leaving
her alone made her act "like a madwoman" (V, 460). Andromache differs greatly from Helen here in
the way that she so desperately wants Hector to live while Helen seemingly wants Paris dead.

Most Honorable Character: Hector or Achilles?
George Honey Mrs. Moore
English Literature
3 April 2011
Most Honorable Character: Hector or Achilles?
Honor: honesty, fairness, or integrity in one 's beliefs and actions; this is the definition by which
these two characters, Hector and Achilles, ought to be judged. By taking this definition to heart,
Achilles is far from honorable. Throughout the Iliad, Achilles acts on rage and revenge. "Rage–
Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles, murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaens countless
losses, hurling down to the House of Death so many sturdy souls, great fighters' souls, but made
their bodies carrion, feasts for the dogs and birds..." (1, 1–5) From the beginning of the epic the

Hector also killed Patroclus. He is well respected by not only his comrades, but by his enemies as
well. When he decided to stop and speak in the midst of battle, both sides stopped fighting just to
listen to him. He is a loving husband and devoted father, as well as devoted son and sibling. He did
not hurt his brother when he confessed he would rather sleep around than go into battle.
Hector fights in his kingdom, unlike any of the Achaean commanders do, which shows even more
honor. Hector has a deep real love for his wife and children. They are his first and foremost thought,
not himself such as Achilles. As much as he loves his family, he is always committed to his
responsibilities for Troy. When he took the leadership role of Troy, he commits his life to serving his
country and follows through with his commitment until his death.
Although respected and a mighty warrior, like most heroes, Hector also had flaws. The flaw of his
that stands out the most is his cowardice. Such cowardice is demonstrated when he runs away from
runs away from Ajax two times. He then receives insults from his soldiers and is emotionally
instable for a moment. This causes him to treat his opponents and others very cruelly.
When Achilles first challenges Hector, Hector tries to talk his way out of it; yet again showing his
cowardice. But, in the end, Hector decides to battle Achilles even though he knows the gods have

While comparing to a lower level, or comparing yourself to the less fortunate, can in fact be a
benefit to one's self esteem, it also comes at a very dangerous price. It requires that we take pleasure
in someone else's misfortunes or failures in order to feel good about ourselves, which can lead to
mean spirited competitiveness, and jealousy. "When comparing leads you to devalue yourself or
others you have entered a dangerous territory" (Huffington Post). Most of the time what you are
comparing yourself to is inaccurate information. A lot of people tend to hide the entire negative in
their life and just show the positive, is it really fair to compare yourself when you do not have all of
the information? Comparing yourself does not actually help you accomplish your goals. When you
spend all of your time focused on how someone else is better looking, is more successful, or has
more friends it is both ineffective and time consuming. Comparing yourself to other people is a
losing battle. If comparing is how you evaluate your self worth, you will always be losing. You will
never reach a point where you are better than others in every way that you would want to be. That is
part of what makes life so interesting, learning from the talents and qualities of others. Instead of
comparing yourself and trying to be better than or as good as others, focus that energy on bettering
yourself and being the very best that you can

How Does Hector Change Throughout The Iliad
This passage from the epic poem The Iliad takes place near the end of book six. This book starts off
with Hector, son of the Trojan King Priam, entering Troy after being in battle. He stands out as he
enters due to the city being full of women and children, as all the men are out in battle. He walks
around the city, first meeting with his mother, Hecuba, then meeting with his brother, Paris, and then
finally meeting with his wife and son, Andromache and Astyanax. Hector then proceeds to talk with
his wife and play with his son, before finally returning to battle.
This passage re–enforces the theme of following the heroic code, and choosing glory of family.

How Is Hector Loyal
Hector is the hero of the Iliad because he is the most loyal to his people. Enraged by the cowardly
actions of his brother Paris, Hector attempts to bring Paris into the war: "...it is for you that this war
has flared up about our city." Hector could have given up on the war and go home to his wife, but he
is loyal to his people and he is not one to be a coward like his brother. Although the great Trojan
loves his family dearly, he must "... fight always among the Trojans" and his family knows how
committed he is to fighting. The success of the Trojans was due to Hector's loyalty.
Hector is the hero of the Iliad because he has a strong connection to his family. When Hector visits

Hector, Priam And Hector As A Hero As An Epic Hero
Homer writes one of the most artful pieces of literature that has been enjoyed for thousands of years.
Originally, Homer wrote The Iliad on Linear B tablets, one of the oldest forms of Greek writing that
we have been able to decipher to this day. The Iliad paints a colorful picture of how the Greeks
perceived gods, life, war, and women. Today we are going to be reviewing book 24 of The Iliad and
the final review of the three heroes Hector, Priam and Hector and how each one is vital to
completing the definition of an epic hero.
Hector a man of loyal followers, and of noble character. Hector enters the scene of The Iliad in book

. . . / "Courage, Dardan Priam, take heart, ... / Zeus commands you to ransom royal Hector," (24:
202–209). Priam without a second thought got the wagon ready filled to the brim with gifts for
Achilles. Priam put aside his personal status as king and raced to follow the gods and bravely meet
with Achilles. When Priam met with Achilles there was a point in their interaction where Homer
writes that "[t]he old man was terrified. He obeyed the order." (24: 670) Many people take that to
argue that he is not brave because he is afraid, but I believe that this verse helps continue to portray
the bravery that King Priam had that even though he was terrified he did not become rash and harsh
but instead found wisdom in guiding the conversation to a place that would bring these two men
together. That takes bravery to come face to face with the extraordinary Achilles.
Achilles a man of incomparable strength and fighting skills. Achilles is the main character of The

Hector Is The Greatest Hero In The Trojan War
I believe that Hector is the greater hero in the Trojan War. Hector is the bravest warrior in the Trojan
army. He meets his match when he fights Achilles, but he still manages to wreak havoc on the
Achaean army during Achilles' period of absence. He leads the assault that finally defeated the
Achaeans. He is the first and only Trojan to set an Achaean ship on fire. But the traits that Hector
has that make him heroic are that he excels in skills such as strength and courage. Hector accepts
challenges and even invites them in. Finally Hector is a man of action and is always constantly
fighting and does not rest.
First, Hector is the greatest hero in the Trojan War because he carries many different skills within
him. He is strong, just as he is courageous. He uses his strength to fight, and try to win the war. He
uses his strength to fight for a selfless cause. He fights so Paris can keep his prize, the great Helen.

Hector Berlioz's 'Symphonie Fantastique'
Review: Symphonie Fantastique
Symphonie Fantastique is the first full musical outpouring of romanticism composer, Hector
Berlioz. Hector Berlioz is a French composer, a microcosm of the romantic era. Symphony
Fantastique is a quintessential example of romantic programmatic music. It is a novel, unlike poetry.
It is free of structural form; based on Berlioz being under the influence and remembering of an
unattainable woman. There are five movements; his first tempers his depression, his love and
jealousy which then rage to religious consolation. The second movement is about his encounter with
her at ball. The third movement consists of him seeking peace while wandering in the countryside
only to have her disrupt his peace.
There is a slow introduction; you get a sense of longing in the music suggesting that Berlioz is
feeling sad before he saw his lady friend. The symphony plays a slow introduction in a classical
sonata style. The muted strings play a sort of veiled tune and it fits Berlioz's romantic spirit. The
orchestra gives off a dreamlike condition and the melody provides a sense of loneliness, and despair,
a description of how Berlioz feels. The key it is being played in is C minor.
In the first movement a recurrent theme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

descending and the tempo increases. "Idèe Fixe" is incorporated as soon as Berlioz sees the woman
again and then it slowly fades away because the waltz takes over as she disappears into the crowd.
The music becomes livelier. At the end there is a whirling rush and the movement ends because

Though some may call him cruel and incapable of feelings sadness, I find that his defense against

is a very important aspect in the tale because without Athena pretending to be Deiphobus, Hector
might not have even fought him. After defeating Hector, Achilles showed no sign of remorse and
took the body into the town to show his victory off. Even though readers can feel the fear that came
from Hector as he was slowly dying, Achilles gave no mercy because he was fighting for his people
which makes him a hero in my book. Others might say Achilles is a bad person for not allowing the
body of Hector to go back to his family, but in those times the the main purpose of ending a war was
to exchange the bodies to gloat over their success. In my mind, if Hector were to kill Achilles he

Alan Bennett's play The History Boys, is set in the 1980s and centres on his own sixth form

How Is Hector An Epic Hero
Some may contemplate why Hector is considered one of the heroes, in Homer's The Iliad, without
truly understanding the meaning and characteristics of a heroic man. First and foremost, Hector in
particular is one of the most important figures of The Iliad because he embodies general ideas and
essential qualities of an epic hero. Throughout the entire book Hector, prince of Troy, is presented as
a man going to dire straights to protect the city he so dearly loves. He also bravely faces his

Achilles Vs Hector Research Paper
Achilles vs. Hector
Hector is the more admirable character in the Iliad because he is the less superior man in the story
compared to Patroclos and Achilles as they are both extraordinarily stronger and greater fighters.
Hector is more brave than any of his men that are in the army along side him. Achilles is known as
the greater fighter and he is fearless which he shows in the battle on the beach outside the walls of
Troy. The reason Hector is more admirable is his braveness and courage to fight for what he stands
for. Hector gives him men a reason to respect him which he fulfills day to day.
Hector and Achilles are both great men and fighters but they come from two different sides. Hector
is the defender and leader of the Troy army and Achilles is the defender and leader of the Greek
army. Another reason hector is more admirable is because he has a family that he is fighting for and
defending while on the other hand Achilles does not so he comes off as more fearless and has little
to lose. The main reason Achilles and Hector end up in a face to face battle to the death is because of
Hector's actions. Previously Hector murdered Achilles close friend Patroclos by delivering a fatal ...
