Introduction Herbal products in cosmetics or herbs in cosmetics are referred as a botanical origin products in cosmetics. Definition - Herbal Cosmetics are defines as a beauty products which possesses desirable physiological activities such as skin healing, smoothing, appearance enhancing and conditioning properties because of the herbal ingredients.

Classification Herbal Cosmetics are classified as follows- Those used for enhancing the appearance of facial skin. Those used for hair growth and care. Those used for skin care, especially in teenagers ( achne , pimples, etc.) Used as a Shampoos, soap, powder and perfumery etc. Used as miscellaneous products.

Herbs used in cosmetics ALOE VERA GEL Synonym: Aloe , Musabbar , Kumari , Karphad . Biological Source: Aloe Vera gel obtained after eliminating the outermost tissue of the leaves of Aloe barbadensis , belonging to family- Liliaceae . Morphology - Colour - Yellowish to greenish. Odor – Characteristic. Taste - intensely bitter and nauseating. Chemical Constituents: The most important constituents of toe are aloin , barbaloin and isoborbaloin about 10-50% Other constituents are resin, aloe- emodin , water, amino acids, lipids, sterols enzymes and polysaccharides like pectin and hemicelluloses.

Cosmetics Uses: Aloe Vera gel is widely used in cosmetology as a hydrating ingredients in liquid or creams like sun lotions, shaving creams, lip balms, healing ointments, face packs and hair conditioner. Extract of Aloe or Aloin are used in sun-cream and other cosmetics preparation as emollient, anti-wrinkles and wound healers.

Herbs used in cosmetics ALMOND OIL Chemical Constituents: It consists of olein with a small proportion of the glycerides of linolic acid and other glycerides. It also consists of fatty acids like palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, margaric acid, stearic acid, arachidoic acid and behenic acid. It also contains sitosterol , cholesterol and tocopherol in small amount and crystalline cyanogenetic glycosides like amygdaline.

Herbs used in cosmetics Almond oil – Therapeutic Uses: a) Almonds possess demulcent and nutrient properties. b) It is used as a vehicle for oily injections in cosmetology. c) Injections are used as hemorrhoids. d) It posses emollient property when applied externally. e) It is used in the preparation of cold cream, hair lotion and a medical and toilet preparations. Cosmetics Uses: 1. Almond oil is mainly used in cosmetology, dermatology and for many toilet articles. 2. Low molecular weight protein fraction is reported to relive skin Irritation. 3. Purified essential almond oil is used as flavors chiefly in agricultural and food industries.

Biological Source: Is volatile oil obtained by steam distillation of fresh flowering top of Levendula officinalis and Levendula angustifolia , belonging to family – Labiatae . Morphology: Color : Colorless to yellow liquid. Odor - Pleasant aromatic. Taste - Bitter pungent. Solubility - Lavender oil is soluble in alcohol. Chemical Constituents: The chief constituents of the oil are Linalool and its acetic ester, linalyl acetate. Other constituents of the oil are cineol, pinene , limonene, geraniol , borneol and some tannin.

Red Lavender lozenges are employed both as a mild stimulant and for their pleasant taste. The essential oil, or a spirit of Lavender, proves admirably restorative and tonic against faintness, palpitations of a nervous sort, weak giddiness, and spasms and colic. Also used in aromatherapy.

Occasionally lavender oil is used in ointments and lotion formulation to mask the disagreeable odors. Biological Source: It is volatile oil obtained by distillation of fresh flowering top of the plant Rosmarinus officinalis , belonging to Family – Labiatae Morphology: Color - Colourless to pale yellow. Odor – Characteristic. Taste - Camphoraceous . Solubility - Soluble in organic solvent and insoluble in water.

Herbs used in cosmetics ROSEMARY OIL Chemical Constituents: Plant contains some tannic acid, together with resin, bitter principle and volatile oil. The chief constituents of the oil are borneol , bornyl acetate, other asters, cineol, pinene and camphene. The chief adulterants of rosemary oil are oil of turpentine and petroleum. Therapeutic Uses: Tonic, astringent, diaphoretic, stimulant. Oil of rosemary has the carminative properties, excellent stomachic and nervine tonic and curing many cases of head ache. It is employed in hair lotions, for its odour and effect in stimulating the hair-bulbs to renewed activity and preventing premature baldness. The oil is also used externally as a rubefacient and is added to liniments as a fragrant stimulant. Act as smooth muscle relaxant in aromatherapy.

Biological Source: It is volatile oil obtained by distillation from dried heart-wood (Inner wood) of Santalum album belonging to family, Santalaceae . Morphology: Color: Yellowish or pale reddish Odor : Strong and fragrant Taste: Slightly bitter. Chemical Constituents: Sandalwood oil contains two isomeric sesquiterpines alcohol like alpha- santalol and Beta- santalol . It also contains aldehyde i.e. santalal , ketone , santenone . Apart from that it also contains santene , teresantol , santalone and santalene .

Oil used as perfume in cosmetics and incense sticks. Used internally in chronic bronchitis, a few drops on sugar giving relief in chronic cystitis, with benzoic and boric acids. Used as a perfume for different purposes . The wood is used for making fancy articles and is much carved.
