Herbs Botanical definition: A herb is a non-woody, seed producing plant that dies to the ground at end of the growing season. Culinary definition: Herbs are vegetable products that are used to as add flavor or aroma to food. Medicinal definition: Herbs are crude drug of vegetable origin that are used in the treatment of disease state, often of a chronic nature, or to attain or maintain a condition of improved health. 7 April 2020 Krishna Pharmacy College, Bijnor 3
Herbal Drugs Definition: This category includes vitamins, minerals and nutrients or ingredients isolated from plant. These have physiological benefits and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Present Scope of Herbal D rug Industry Worldwide there is a growing demand for Ayurveda and other traditional forms of medicine . In India, about 80% of the rural population uses medicinal herbs or indigenous systems of medicine. Herbs have been known since the era of civilization and are highly esteemed all over the world as a rich source of medicinal agents. The popularity of natural products is increasing day by day due to the facts that they are comparatively safe, less toxic, less side effects, easily available and affordable prices when compared to synthetic drugs. The herbal drug industry is a very fast growing sector in the international market. In India, various system of medicine like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani , Homeopathy, Yoga & Naturopathy are being utilized for the Health care of people. 7 April 2020 Krishna Pharmacy College, Bijnor 5
Recently there has been a shift in universal trend from synthetic to herbal medicine, which we can say ‘ Return to Nature ’ Medicinal plants have been known for millennia & highly esteemed all over the world as a rich source of medicinal agents . In our country, there are so many plants available, therefore India known as ‘Medicinal Garden of World’ . In India, system of medicine like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani , homeopathy, Yoga & Naturopathy are being utilized for the health care of people. one reason for popularity of natural products is that belief that all are safe, non –toxic, less side effect, easily affordable prices. In international market now a days, herbal drug industry is very fast growing sector. Scope of Herbal Drug Medicine and Industry Turnover of the industry is more than Rs 80 billion. Herbal exports include medicines of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Unani , Siddha, and homoeopathy) products, which occupy a share of 3% of total Indian pharmaceutical export . More than 70% of India’s 1.1 billion populations still use these non-allopathic system of medicine. Currently there is no separate category of herbal drugs or dietary supplements, as per the Indian Drugs Act. However, there is a vast experiential-evidence base for many of the natural drugs. The ‘Herbal Industry’ has reveled that currently, the Indian herbal market size is estimated at 7000 crore & over 3600 crore of herbal raw materials & medicine are exported by India . 7 April 2020 Krishna Pharmacy College, Bijnor 7
Indian Herbal Industry As per Associated chamber of Commerce & Industry (ASSOCHAM), the herbal drug & its application become very popular across the world. In India, about 25,000 licensed pharmacy are working. Presently 1000 single drugs & about 3000 compound formulations are registered. In india , about 8000 medicinal plants are used. Non of them have a standerd marker & animal for their bioactivity . From abt 8000 manufaturares , 25 mfgs large scale mfgs . The annual turnover is around US $ 300 million in Ayurvedic & Unani medicine was about US $ 27.7 million. International Scope of Herbal Medicines According to the world Health Organization(WHO), approximately 25 per cent of modern drugs used in the United State(US) have been derived from plants. More than 120 active compounds isolated from higher plants are widely used in modern allopathic medicine today and 80% of them show a positive co-relation between their modern therapeutic use and the traditional use of the plants from which they are derived. At least 7000 medicinal compounds derived from plants, the ingredients of herbal medicine, are include in the modern pharmacopoeia of drugs. 7 April 2020 Krishna Pharmacy College, Bijnor 9
Continue……. WHO estimated that 80 per cent of the world’s population currently use Herbal Medicine for same aspects of primary health care. They are also highly lucrative in the international market, generating billions of dollars in revenue. To cite a few examples, annual revenue from herbal medicines and herbal products in Western Europe reached US $ 5 billion in 2003-2004. World Wide Herbal Trade Global market for herbal product stands at over $ 60 billion annually…now it is 6.5% increased. Significant factor: 1 ) Preference of consumers for natural therapy 2 ) Concern regarding undesirable side effects of modern disease. 3 ) the belief that herbal medicines are free from side effect. Herbal medicine-based Traditional Medical system of treatment is a rapidly growing healthcare system of economic importance and is now widely used in many countries of the world. The following leads and development are the future prospects in the herbal drug industry. Plant products can also be useful as starting material for the semi synthetic preparation of other drugs. Examples: Plant Steroids ( Diosgenin ): Oral contraceptives, harmones Microorganisms (Streptomyces genus): Antibiotics (Streptomycin, neomycin, tetracycline, chloromphenicol ) The interest in natural products as a source of new biologically active compounds has expanded due to increasing research and development in phytochemistry . 7 April 2020 Krishna Pharmacy College, Bijnor 15
Natural products will continue to be important in the following three areas of drug discovery. As targets for production by biotechnology. A separate department for Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy now known as AYUSH(Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani , Siddha, Homoeopathy) was established in march 1995 to promote indigenous system.
