Why? فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ      So when you want to recite the Qur'ân, seek refuge with Allâh from Shaitân (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one). An-Nahl (The Bee) [16:98] FAST Tajweed Intensive - Summer 2012

مَخَارِجُ الْحُرُوفِ Organs of Speech There are 5 organs of speech in which the Arabic letters come from as shown below: Al- Jawf : the empty space in the chest through the throat and mouth Al- Halq : the throat Al- Lisaan : the tongue Ash- Shafataan : the two lips Al- Khayshoom : the nose or nasal passage

Al- Jawf الْجَوف Al- Jawf : this is the empty space in the chest area. There are 3 letters that come from this organ. The 3 letters are: ي و ا These letters only come from Al- Jawf in certain conditions as follows: The 3 letters must be Sakin . This means they must have a Sukoon or come with no vowel which is usually the case. Each of the above letters must have a similar sounded vowel on the preceding letter. This means: The ا ( Alif ) must be Sakin and the previous letter must have a Fatha ( َ ). The و ( Waaw ) must be Sakin and the previous letter must have a Dhamma ( ُ ). The ي ( Yaa ) must be Sakin and the previous letter must have a Kasra ( ِ ). If we have these letters in the above conditions then we can call them Jawf or Madd letters.

Al- Jawf الْجَوف Al- Jawf : this is the empty space in the chest area. There are 3 letters that come from this organ. The 3 letters are: ي و ا What does it mean for the above letters to be in Jawf condition? It means that we will have to lengthen or stretch the letter for a minimum of 2 Harakah’s (around 1.5 seconds) Example of Jawf or Madd letters: Example of Alif : قَ ا لَ Example of Waaw : قُ و لُ و ا Example of Yaa : قِ ي لَ

Al- halq الْحَلْقُ Al- halq : the Throat. In the throat we have 3 exits and 6 letters. خ غ ح ع ه ء Throat exits and letters: bottom of the throat: ء , ه Middle of the throat: ع , ح Top of the throat: غ , خ

Al- lisaan اللِّسَانُ Al- Lisaan : the Tongue. In the tongue we have 4 areas, 10 exits and 18 letters in total. Areas of tongue: Back of the tongue: ق 1 , ك 2

2. Middle of the tongue: ج 3 , ش 3 , ي 3

Edges & sides of the tongue: ض 4 , ل 5

Tip of the tongue: ن 6 , ر 7 , ت 8 , د 8 , ط 8 , س 9 , ص 9 , ز 9 , ث 10 , ذ 10 , ظ 10

Articulation areas: The Tongue Letter Noon – ن Tip of the tongue touching the gums/roots of the two top front teeth. النَّاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ

Articulation areas: The Tongue Letter Ra – ر Tip of the tongue touching the hard palate, near the gums of the front two teeth. مِن شَرِّ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Articulation areas: The Tongue ظ ذ ث Tip of the tongue touches the edges of the top two teeth. مَثَلُهُمْ آذَانِهِم أَظْلَمَ

Articulation areas: The Tongue ص س ز The edges of the top and lower front teeth close together and the tip of the tongue comes near them. In other words, tip of the tongue just misses the edges of the top and lower front teeth. For all three of these letters, a whistle sound is produced. بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَارِهِمْ رِجْزاً

Al- Khayshoom الْخَيشُوم Al- Khayshoom : this is the nasal passage where the Ghunna (the attribute for the letters ن and م ) comes from. There are no letters that come from this organ however its considered an organ due to it being used a lot in the recitation of Quran.
