Economic Activity and Society

As humans, we adapt to our environment and alter it to obtain more resources. We have developed methods of producing , exchanging and consuming goods and services to meet our needs. The economy is the collection of goods, services and activities that we humans have developed to meet our needs . It constitutes the wealth of a given geographic area. Economic activity allows us to survive, can even make us rich and prosperous, but it can also make us bankrupt.

Exercise : How does the economy influence our physical surroundings? Give three examples of spaces in Vitoria that have been transformed by economic activity.

Unequal Distribution on Earth. As our relationship with the physical environment and other human beings becomes more complex, the inequalities in the way people live can increase. The distribution of economic activity across the world is extremely unequal. In order to identify the areas of the world with more or less economic activity, we use different indicators:

Gross Domesic Product (GDP): Measures the total goods and services produced in a geographic area in a given year. Human Developed Index (HDI): Measures the amount of people who have got access to education, healthcare… (basic needs) Employment Data For a Country: How many people are employed or unemployed. Household Consumption: How much money families spend. State Investment.

The geographic distribution of the indicators studied before tell us the following about the distribution of wealth and inequality around the world. The majority of Africa and some parts of Asia and Latin America have less economic activity. Economic activies are concentrated in three regions of the world: North America, Europe and East Asia.
