On Leadership Leadership is…. Strategic leadership is critical for the success of any organization. The importance of leadership is solving an organizational problem The essence of Leadership in the citadel of learning is to respond to the numerous challenges in the world (Alonderiene and Klimaviciene, 2016).
Leadership is also… Effective Leadership can be found in every sphere of life; Politics Economy Socio-cultural Education
Leadership in University Management The United States tops the chart of leading universities in the world. Accounting for an array of ivy league universities in the world, with a remarkable presence in science, technology, and medicine (Jalaliyoon & Taherdoost, 2018).
The Case of University of Chicago The University of Chicago still retains her pride of honor in maintaining the chart as one of the best universities in the United States by educational ranking organizations. The University has lived up to expectation in providing quality education through training of Americans citizens and international students’ who graduated from the University.
The Turning Point…. The watershed for the appraisal of the leadership styles on faculty performance in American universities started to take shape in the early 1960s (Vietzen, 2017). With the introduction of Management-by-Objectives/Results known in the 1960s as a performance appraisal which is used to assess the performance of individual work efficiency across the United States. In order to have a proper guide to measure or evaluate the performance of faculty, the university leadership adopted Paget, Cresap, and McCormick ‘The specific plan’ template as a tool for measuring performance (Vietzen, 2017).
Taking the Lead The University of Chicago happens to be the first university in the state of Chicago to adopt ‘The Specific Plan’. The initiative of the leadership of the University is to ensure that the school is one of the most sought after in the United States (Aslam, 2019).
The Outcome…. The adoption of transformational leadership by the school’s management has driven them to become more effective in the transmission of knowledge. This leadership style has aided the success of the faculty in many ways even in a situation when certain faculty performance falls below expectations.
World Bank Perception To ensure that the higher educational institutions maintain a good quality, the need to seek highly-motivated and well-qualified faculty is critical (World Bank, 2020). To achieve this there is a need to establish well-known mechanisms to evaluate the performance of well-qualified and highly-motivated faculty in any university system (Blackmore, 2019).
The motivation Since the essence of universities across the globe is to attract students, for this reason, faculty performance is crucial for overall university performance. Blackmore (2019) asserts that an effective leadership style or management method can aid faculty performance in the short and long run.
In Conclusion… What defines a nation goes beyond the natural resources such a nation possess but also depend on the quality of the people, the management style of its leadership, and the nature of government in operation, in terms of the people, the bedrock of national development is rooted in education.
