SPANISH PERIOD 1521 - 1898

March 15, 1521 – Fernão de Magalhães Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese working under Spain, REDISCOVERED the Philippines.

March 31, 1521 – LIMAWASA The First Catholic Mass in the Philippines was on Easter Sunday officiated by Padre de Valderrama .

April 14, 1521 – CHRISTIAN FILIPINOS Magellan met Chieftain Rajah Humabon converted the first (800) Christian Filipinos.

April 27, 1521 – Magellan’s death Magellan was struck by a bamboo spear, and later surrounded and finished off with other weapons.

1543 – Felipinas Ruy Lopez de Villalobos reached Mindanao on February 2 of the following year, the first Spaniard to make explorations in that Island.

May 19, 1571 – Spanish colonial government Governor-General Miguel López de Legazpi gave the title  city to the colony of Manila.

1603 – Luzon tragedy Over 30,000 Chinese merchants were killed, along with officials and civilians by Spanish chieftain.

1621 – 1683 Revolts and uprisings against religious customs and Spanish rule occurred throughout the Philippines .

1744 – Dagohoy Dagohoy Revolt in Bohol lasted 85 years, provided independence from Spanish rule.

1762 – Europe’s seven years war British attacked and occupied Manila.

1763 – Treaty of Paris British occupation of Philippines ended when Treaty of Paris signed by England, Spain and France; Manila was returned to Spain.

January 20, 1872 – Cavite Conspiracy Three priests executed as alleged leaders of Cavite Conspiracy.

1896 – Insurrection of Spanish rule The Katipunan had a membership by the thousands.

December 10, 1898 – Treaty of Paris  It marked the end of the Spanish Empire and the beginning of the  age of the United States as a world power .
