The Beatles, their sound, and their lyrical style, but nevertheless rock and roll emerged as one of the
most successful genres in popular music (Considine 34). New musical genres are subject to both
tremendous praise and harsh criticism, and in the 1990's the genre of hip–hop and rap experienced
just that. Throughout its evolution in the 90's, hip–hop and rap endured harsh criticism from not only

The Notorious B.I.G.: A Biography is a fantastic book suited for any Hip Hop fans across the
country, describing his life at such a high level that not many could top. The book went through his
entire life before his music career all the way to his death, and was 122 pages well spent.
This nonfiction book was created by Holly Lang, a freelance writer and editor who started off her
career as a reporter for the Birmingham Post–Herald and the Associated Press. She is the founding
editor of Pine Magazine as well. Although this book is suited for Hip Hop fans, many others could
enjoy and relate to this book as well, like music fans in general, people who want to get out of the

student, but eventually thought he was better off dealing drugs rather than getting an education. He
then found his love for rapping. He decided to make a tape with 50 Grand, the tape was passed to
Mister Cee, a DJ for Big Daddy Kane, who said "It was a message from God that I had to hear that
tape" (12). After getting passed around a few times, it finally got to a music representative at
Uptown Records named Sean Combs who eventually signed him. But Combs became unhappy at
Uptown so he left to start his own record label at just 20 years old, named Bad Boy Records, and
Biggie followed him there with a few others where Biggie released his first album Ready To Die,
which ended up being a huge success. Although, after 2 2Pac shootings, one of which he died
during, Biggie and Bad Boy Records received the blame for both from many. But Biggie and Bad
Boy Records ignored it and kept doing their thing, when Biggie released some of the best singles of
all time, but just a year after 2Pac's death, Biggie knew he was next and he was right, getting shot
dead in a drive–by shooting in Los Angeles. However just 16 days later, his 2nd album dropped
called Life After Death, which ended up being 1 of 7 Hip Hop albums to ever be certified Diamond

people's perspective towards the Earth as the song raised awareness around the world just as

"Hip–hop/rap is a subcultural movement that formed during the early 1970s in the Bronx, New
York" ("Hip hop"). Hip– hop has changed the way we speak, dress, think, and has even altered the
way artist make music. Traveling all around The United States, Hip–hop has made many different
names for itself. There is MC Rap, Gangsta Rap, Conscious Rap, and Old School Rap sprouting
from the meaning of Hip–hop, all urban genres using different types of dialect. According to Oxford
Dictionaries, dialect is "a particular form of a language that is peculiar to a specific region or social
group" ("Dialect"), they decide on the type of message they want to convey to the listener through
the rap. The two rappers I have chosen to show the growth in Hip–hop language history, are
Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg. Lamar is considered as an American influential rapper. Whereas,
the west coast godfather, Snoop Dogg, falls under the genre of gangsta rap. These West Coast
rappers are from the same area, but when it comes to Hip–hop, they seem to speak a different
language. The evolution of the world changes the topics discussed in Hip–hop, these two artists
promote similar messages in their music, such as gang affiliation, unity, and politics.

of expression called rap. In essence rap is just lyrics over a basic beat or rhythm. Many members of
society today assume that rap is a dangerous and violent influence, however what they seem to be
ignorant of is the fact that rap music is actually beneficial. The majority of the world we live in
today has unjustly classified rap as a barbaric form of music, unfit for any decent human to listen to,
but the reality of the situation is, that people simply cannot accept the culture known as rap into
society. Nowadays, rappers such as Kanye, Soulja Boi, and Wiz Khalifa are receiving much
criticism about the way they portray their "hoodlum" lifestyle or the way they "encourage" violence
through their music, when in actuality they are venting about the unfair circumstances society has
forced them into. Listening to rap music and it's positive vibes is in fact beneficial based on

Gin And Juice Analysis
The song I chose for this comparison is "Gin and Juice". This song was originally released by Snoop
Dogg in 1993 and is performed with the traditional "West Coast Rap" sounds of the time. One
successful cover of this song was released by The Gourds in 1998, who performed the song in a
bluegrass/Alt. country style. One of the major differences between the two performances is the

Music has always had an effect on people on their culture. From Jazz in the 1920's to Rap just
starting up in the late 1980's. Different genres of music have different effects on people and no genre

Music has always had an effect on people on their culture. From Jazz in the 1920's to Rap just
starting up in the late 1980's. Different genres of music have different effects on people and no genre
is specific to any culture. There are a variety of people that are affected by various genres of music
that you would least expect and it's helping expand the music industry greatly. I believe the most
influential genre of music in my opinion is Hip Hop/Rap.
Hip Hop/Rap started from block parties in New York City in the late 70's. MC's paid DJ's to
introduce them to crowds and to also to keep the crowds pumped up and entertained. The DJ's came
into play after each song and they were the ones to try and get the crowd involved and keep them
entertained. The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," released in 1979 and Kurtis Blow's "The

that an elevated popular music involvement is a risk factor with respect to teenager's substance use
behavior. More specifically, Chen et al. (2006) found a relationship between teens who listen to rap
music and the use of marijuana. This study included asking teenagers about their music preferences
and whether they had used marijuana or not. This study was conducted through an anonymous
survey. The results of this study showed that teens who listened to rap music on a regular basis were
more likely to use marijuana during their teenage years. In a study done by Vuolo et al. (2013) they
used a survey based in New York to question teenagers about their music preference. Questions
about the use of marijuana were also asked. The results of this study found that the teens who
preferred listening to Hip–Hop and rap were 87% more likely to use marijuana than the teens that
listened to alternative rock and pop music. Slater (2013), Chen et al. (2006), and Vuolo et al. (2013)
all show that music can have an effect on substance use. This shows that when teenagers listen to
music where drugs, marijuana for example, are glorified, it can have an effect on their use of this
